Bench seat head rest upgrade

I am, but I have the back frame from a headrest bench.  If you're talking about integrating headrests into a bench from scratch, that's more challenging, but where there's a welder and a will, there's a way. :D

ohh is that just a bolt on type thing

if you ever have the chance to snag a bench with headrests, even if it is in horrible shape, don't hesitate. :D

yeah I definitely will. foam headrests must be comfy compared to my sliding class headrest

I was today years old when I found out that some bench seats had head rests! Wow.

The question remains, to swap or not to swap? :driving:

I have friends that have put their head through the back glass after the smallest of fender benders.  some still live with pain from the accident a decade later.

the answer is to swap.  :L:

this chap had a passenger.  :(

Does anyone have photos of a bench seat with integrated headrest? I am curious how the seat was modified by chrysler. It looks like the bottom seat foam was formed around the top of the springs, but I don't know how the back was designed. It would be nice if the back foam can be removed without severe destruction.

The best case would be removable foam front and the springs on the back side. I'd be happy as a clam if I just need to weld on a bracket and the headrest mechanism from a bucket seat. :brows:

seat foam is removable.  back foam is not (at least not by design).  I just recently converted an 88 to having headrests by swapping out the back portion. :L:

The foam on the seat back can be removed you just need to cut a single line along the frame and springs from the back side. The foam will be able to be reused and I never had any issues with it afterward. I had to remove mine in order to weld it back together.821221306_IMG_20210923_2032560702.jpg.bb27600b044bc1163aa609825b449d58.jpg

Woah, Thanks for all the photos guys! :L:

Now I'm curious how the headrests come out. Is there a simple button adjuster and the headrest pulls out like a fork?

I'm wondering if I could reuse my seat cover and just make two holes and a plastic trim washer.

Interesting... :brows:

Here is a pic of the bracket that is welded on the bucket seats. 777528819_IMG_20230528_1546077103.jpg.2a93507e7ea8d42bbad9056408bb05e9.jpg

There are plastic sleeves that slide into those and head rests slide into those.

Woah, excellent photos. Thanks for these!

These photos and the ones from @pizzaman09's heated seat guide paint a lot clearer picture of what's needed for a headrest mod.

Thanks guys!

You are welcome!

While you have the upholstery off, add heated seat pads!:brows:  If you are adding headrests, you might as well go all out on the fancy.

So what are the basic steps to removing the seat back, getting to the skeleton, and then putting it back together since mine seems to have recently broken something inside in this general area (from @Eagle_SX4 pic earlier in this thread).  Knowing nothing about it, it seems like a lot of upholstery sewing skills and equipment might be needed to put it back together, assuming you know how to get it apart in a condition that allows it to be usefully put back together.

Something appears to be broken in the area indicated, I know because pushing down in that area is met with a very noticeable clunk, however the seat back currently looks perfect so apparently the foam is holding the shape with at rest.

Shouldn't need any sewing skills, the seat covers come on and off in simple ways.
