Muncher
Has anyone added head rests to a bench that doesn't already have them? if so how did you do it and where did you need to do it. i know pete is also wanting to do this.
eaglescout526
Late 90-92 MJs had these seats.
Pete M
I am, but I have the back frame from a headrest bench. If you're talking about integrating headrests into a bench from scratch, that's more challenging, but where there's a welder and a will, there's a way. Pete M
I sure hope so. I haven't had the chance to take my 88's bench apart yet to see. that project has taken a seriously back burner to other household things.
Muncher
you will have to update me on it once you do it. if i do this it means i will own three benches.
Pete M
if you ever have the chance to snag a bench with headrests, even if it is in horrible shape, don't hesitate.

eaglescout526
You know what. I bet if we all got a good look at a bare bench with the head rest holders, I bet we could easily add them.

Pete M
that's... harder than you might think. from what I remember the foam is not easily removed. at least not without destroying it. as if the frame was stuck into the mold and the foam than injected around it. Salvagedcircuit
I was today years old when I found out that some bench seats had head rests! Wow. The question remains, to swap or not to swap?

I have friends that have put their head through the back glass after the smallest of fender benders. some still live with pain from the accident a decade later. the answer is to swap. this chap had a passenger. Salvagedcircuit Posted yesterday at 06:12 AM Share Posted yesterday at 06:12 AM Does anyone have photos of a bench seat with integrated headrest? I am curious how the seat was modified by chrysler. It looks like the bottom seat foam was formed around the top of the springs, but I don't know how the back was designed. It would be nice if the back foam can be removed without severe destruction. The best case would be removable foam front and the springs on the back side. I'd be happy as a clam if I just need to weld on a bracket and the headrest mechanism from a bucket seat. Pete M Posted yesterday at 11:27 AM Share Posted yesterday at 11:27 AM seat foam is removable. back foam is not (at least not by design). I just recently converted an 88 to having headrests by swapping out the back portion.
Eagle_SX4 Posted yesterday at 12:52 PM Share Posted yesterday at 12:52 PM The foam on the seat back can be removed you just need to cut a single line along the frame and springs from the back side. The foam will be able to be reused and I never had any issues with it afterward. I had to remove mine in order to weld it back together.
Salvagedcircuit Posted yesterday at 02:37 PM Share Posted yesterday at 02:37 PM Woah, Thanks for all the photos guys! Now I'm curious how the headrests come out. Is there a simple button adjuster and the headrest pulls out like a fork? I'm wondering if I could reuse my seat cover and just make two holes and a plastic trim washer. Interesting... Eagle_SX4 Posted yesterday at 03:03 PM Share Posted yesterday at 03:03 PM Here is a pic of the bracket that is welded on the bucket seats. There are plastic sleeves that slide into those and head rests slide into those. This is a pic of the bucket seat head rests assembled.

These photos and the ones from @pizzaman09's heated seat guide paint a lot clearer picture of what's needed for a headrest mod. Thanks guys! While you have the upholstery off, add heated seat pads! If you are adding headrests, you might as well go all out on the fancy.
