Manche757 Posted October 26, 2019 Posted October 26, 2019 Replaced the speedo cable on an 89MJ, 4.0 and the needle still jumps. Hopefully the speedometer does not need replacing. If so, are they available from a junker only and not new? Any other ideas?

Any other ideas? take a piece of your old cable and chuck it in a drill so you can run it at different speeds to see if it still jumps, most MJ and XJ speedos jumped from new, was a big complaint in the 80s several TSBs. I replaced and rerouted many cables

I did not install it myself, mechanic did. I do not know if the new cable was greased or not but will find out. What grease do recommend. Are you lubing only the tranny end of the cable? I understand grease on the speedo end will get in the speedometer and create a mess. Your thoughts?

Eagle, My TDI Comanche Speedo needle jumps at lower speeds, then smooths out at higher speeds. You don't glop it on, just a thin coating wiped onto the length of the inner cable as tou slide it back into the outer sheath. There may be newer products now that might be better. Maybe Cruiser will chime in with what they used at his dealership.

Cruiser is correct, no matter what you did seemed to continue to jump, I replaced cables and speedos to still have the problem. I hate to say poor quality parts but I believe speedos were made by same company that made them for Renault Alliance and Encore, I had several of them actually explode in dash with the pieces left attached to cable whipping around inside dash making a mess of everything that got in the way

Yes I believe I have, I was the only tech that liked working on then, weren't flat rate then so I really didn't care, none of the other guys wanted to work on Renaults I was in the truck shop and we were really slow so they kept me busy. For some reason I sort of liked LeCar. If they were set up proper that little two stage carb gave them a little pep, Alliance and Encore were all right, Feugo not so much. My girl friend at the time bought an Alliance GTA it was a lot of fun. The good old days

VixJeep Posted October 28, 2019 Posted October 28, 2019 This isn't a fix, but an observation. My cable jumped for quite a while when I was having idle and vacuum issues. When I got the idle and vacuum issues straightened out, the speedometer stopped jumping. Could be a coincidence, since they shouldn't be related.

Remember burping the cooling system!! We welded a funnel to a coolant cap just to avoid the aggravation repeatedly. 1.4 was a good engine. But they mounted the water pump up real high and when the level dropped in the cooling system, they cooked.
