Radio Speakers

Recommended Posts

A radio speaker in the driver side door of my 89 MJ, 4.0 is not working and needs replacing.  I assume that those should be replaced in pairs; driver's and passenger side.  Hopefully, replacements exits that fit the slot and  connect to a wiring harness that will not have to be cut and spliced.  Anyone have recommendations for new speakers or ones to avoid?

I will also need door speakers for an 87 MJ, 4.0 that never had door speakers.  Hopefully, the same ones will work?

Pretty much any aftermarket 5-1/4" speaker will slot right in. They make adapters to plug the speakers into the factory wiring.

Check the wires inside the little rubber boot going into the door first. Those wires bend a little every time you open or close the door, and can break.

Door Speakers are 5-1/4" diameter.

Behind the Seats, on the Wall are 4"x6"

Your choice, How Good do you want, Wattage Capabilities, Range for Sound Response.

What Head Unit do you have?? Output Capabilities??

I would think about Replacing All at the same time. (What I did)

Confused?? I went to a Car Stereo Shop ( when they were a Specialized Business )

I installed Boss Chaos speakers in the doors and rear in 2015-2016 replacing the original speakers. $15-$20 per pair from Amazon. Obviously not top-of-the line, but definitely better that 25+ year old speakers. Work well for listening to the radio, using bluetooth phone, or a CD every once in a while. While the audiophiles may cringe at my selection, I'm not engaging in any stereo wars. Besides, our trucks are pretty  noisy, so I'm not sure what an expensive set of speakers is going to bring to the table anyway.

Thanks for the tips.  The 89MJ has a bad door speaker.  Another speaker hooked to the wires worked.  I will get a pair of middle of the road speakers to replace the front set.  The sound from the other speakers is surprisingly good.  An original, but broken, Jeep radio was replaced with one from our own Jeremy Radio also know as Minuit which means midnight in French.

The 87MJ never had door speakers but a prior owner installed some high end box speakers behind the seat that are about about 12 inches square.  I intend to leave those but will add door speakers.  Prior owner installed a newer non-Jeep radio that is not working correctly which I will junk and install a Jeep radio from Captain Midnight

Grizz, DZ and SVP, did you find an adapter that fits the wiring harness and the speakers without having to cut wires?

I put new connectors on. It's no big deal. The speakers came with some wire with the connectors attached. Just soldered them together. Don't think I will ever put a factory speaker back in.

Schardein had adapters on sale in the for sale section. They are sold, but it will give you a visual. Still on the first page.
