HI-CNTRD - 1990 XJ Project

Recommended Posts

What I thought would take an hour ended up taking a few more. I decided to get the full soft top on the Scrambler. I knew there would be a learning curve putting it on since I haven’t touch it in 8 years. I found the top and frame work pretty quickly. I took an inventory of the parts and realized that I was missing a few important pieces 🤬. I wen through boxes of Jeep parts and and found all but one piece; a section of support rod. Good for me that that was the only thing missing because I went to Lowes and grab a matching diameter rod :applause:. I forgot how good the top looks on ->

I was told by the company that make the cover that it would not fit the Jeep with a full hard top which sucks because the rain collects in the back and pulls the front back. I am very happy they are wrong ->

The Cherokee will be going up for sale after I get a few things fixed. I am going to keep my Comanche and this would have to be stored on the property rotting away like the MJ unfortunately did. Here will be the ad I place on BaT or something similar. I haven’t taken pictures yet because I’m presently out of town. I started to get the ad written up, so I will prep it here so when I am ready I can cut and paste it where I decide to list it. I have to research what to list it at. I can't total what I have in it to compare to what it is worth. Just a bad idea to do.

For Sale an 1990 Two Door Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4x4 Laredo

Had the Cherokee down at Aamco transmission for them to check out the quirks in the transmission. They rebuilt it the first part of last year. Pretty much had it the whole time I was away working - 8 months 😳. Three weeks ago, I called and they said it was going on the rack that day. He called me back an hour later asking if I had a kill switch in it, because they couldn’t get it to start. I stopped by to see where they were at. They said it was some rodents had eaten some wiring and they fixed it. While working on it the hood cable broke, so they replaced it and also had to put in a new coil and kick down cable. It’s done though. Bringing it to the shop to have them fix a few things next week then it’s going up for sale.

I’m probably getting the XJ back in a few weeks. The guy just fixed my door sagging issue. The fuel tank and fuel pump will both have to be replaced. Key locks are also in. Picked up a new battery for it. Probably shouldn’t say anything about getting it home lol no telling if he is going to switch to another project.

My XJ should be done by next week. I’m going to rent a car and go get it. I have 200 milage tow through AAA. I just have to make it for 30 miles and then would be within the 200 mile range, but I hope it will make it the rest of the way 🤞

I realize now that I don't have to explain why the XJ should be kept. That will surely relieve the anxiety of having to hear "its time get rid of that money pit - it is unreliable!) Now I can have a backup Jeep in the queue :brows:

Just another incriminating photo from a good friend ->

 Its done. I’m still trying to get them both home. I had the sagging door fixed. I had to get a new gas tank as mine was rusted. New fuel pump. Hopefully new gas filter. New speedo cable. The air conditioner is leaking. It shoots cool but only from the defrost vents. I will hopefully get it back soon. I couldn’t find a car rental place that would give me a one way ticket. I called them all.

Spent a lot of money on the jeep and it died 2 miles from home the first time driving it. Won’t stay running. Mechanic said it could be the coolant sensor in the radiator.

The mechanic was saying there are two? The one in the radiator talks to the computer? I have the fan wired to stay on. Not questioning you just desperate to finally fix it. Someone told me it sounds like a fuel pump but it’s new

There are actually 3 coolant temp sensors. In the radiator(fan switch) on the side of the block(computer temp sensor) and in the top back of the head(gauge sensor or dummy light).

The one that talks to the computer is under the intake manifold in the engine block. What I understand is that the sensor helps tell the engine to be in open or closed loop. If it is stuck in open loop it will run rich but it will still run. Either way any of the coolant temp sensors won't change if the engine will run or not.

Something else is causing your engine not to run.

Everything was supposed to be new on the fuel parts? I paid a lot of money to get it right - and 3 years. Put fuel in the TB and it started right up. I don’t think it was changed:brickwall:. Got a new one coming in tomorrow. Bringing the temp sensor back then. Wish me luck

Had a really hard time getting the new fuel pump in. I forgot to put the o ring on before I put the pump in. While taking it back off the pickup screen fell into the tank. My arm was too big to reach in to get it. Luckily I had the boy with me and he was able to get to it. Put it back in and I could not get it in far enough to get it far enough in to get the lock ring on. It didn’t have a new one in the box like the other ones I’ve put in, so the old one had to go on. Did not fit well at all but it looks like it’s in enough to hold it. The Jeep gauge now says empty and I fill it up with gas. The guy said he filled it up and charged me. Apparently the old pump is good. The old pump may have been good :fistshake1:. It running now.

Reinstall the fuel pump and I think it’s all good. Had to buy a new lock ring but it went on easily with the included Oring. Going to find an app that will let me calculate mpg. I may put in a new O2 sensor but will see.

The explorer needs a lot of work to the tune of $3,800 . I need something reliable for now

It never fails. I get the Jeep washed and it starts to rain ->

After 2.5 years sitting in a dusty parking lot, it needs a lot of attention inside. Dust everywhere. I have no idea how. Things are not working - radio, flashers and probably a few other things

I can’t keep ithe Cherokee running. Thousands of dollars to try and get it running and it still won’t run. I switched out the computer and ran but died after 10 miles and had to have towed for the 3rd time. Starts a runs for moment and dies. Like it’s out of gas. I’ve replaced everything I could but could not fix the problem. Time to stop the bleeding. I’m going to put it up in the classified section and hope someone will figure out the problem. I would like to trade for another Comanche that runs and maybe some cash to even it out. My dream XJ turned out to be my biggest nightmare
