It’s where the jack engaged, the jacks looked similar to high lift jacks.

That slot was used for the bumper jack. Should have 4 of them. Yes, I'm old.

Bumper jack.  They haven't been used since the 70s or maybe early 80s

I didn't know this!  Makes sense, it's a variant of the jack points on my 62 Austin Healey and 99 BMW, they both use a rod that goes into the rocker panel to jack it up from the side.  Nice design that kind of locks into place and is fairly stable.

 

I'm not much into old American cars so this is not a detail I've taken note of before.
