Factory Spare Tire Jack Question

Recommended Posts

Actually, my question is more about how the spare tire winch is actually operated.   I don't have an original Owner's Manual for my MJ, so I am guessing on some of this stuff.

There is some sort of handle that goes into the winch to raise/lower the spare.  What does it look like, and where and how is it stored on the vehicle.  I am guessing it's different that what was used on an XJ, correct?

Something tells me that someone here knows if a jack from a 95 zj is the same for MJs.  Are the jacks for 86 thru 92 the same?

Lol a little late... No they are not the same jack. The ZJ jack is significantly fatter and has a different "head' on it. It is too fat to fit against the back wall with the carpeted panel in the back if you're using the factory rubber strap.

Here is a picture comparing the jack handle from an 88 MJ (top) and a 91 XJ (bottom).  The XJ handle will work with the MJ tire winch, but I don't think it will mount to the back wall of the MJ properly.

I'm guessing they made the MJ handle longer because of the longer length of body past the rear axle.

EDIT:  I JUST DID A QUICK TEST, the XJ handle is just long enough to clip in the top clip and be captured at the bottom by the stock retaining bracket.
