Comanche_Dee
Hello I wanted to know if any one switch their manual Comanche to an automatic, I have 1987 Comanche, or would any body happened to know if I can change transmission from a XJ
87MJTIM
Yes. Lots of owners have done it. Is yours 4wd? If so, you will need a transmission with a 21 spline output shaft. Later models (90+?) have 23 splines. These won’t fit your t-case. If you get an XJ auto you could swap all the necessary parts
Comanche_Dee
Thanks for the reply but I have 2wd 2.5 L, also you think I will have the switch the TCM?. I was wondering if my wiring will change as well
87MJTIM
Since a manual did not have a TCM, you will need the one from the XJ. Forget about the tcase since you are 2wd. You will need the drive shaft length adjusted. I believe the manual and auto trans are diff lengths.
Eagle
A 2.5L XJ will probably have the Chrysler 904 automatic transmission. I don't think that used a TCU. It'll work in an MJ, but I don't think MJs used that transmission.
Jeep Driver
The 86 MJ did come with an auto trans in 2.5 yeah I suspect it was the 904 Very few MJ or XJ came with the 2.5 automatic they're out there but you're going to have a hard time finding one And after all that work you're going to regret it
Jeep Driver
The 86 XJ MJ did come with an automatic behind the 2.8 that automatic will bolt up to your 2.5 however there is no provision for a CPS the 86 2.8 that was carbureted and had no need for a CPS You will need the flexplate for a renix 2.5 they are not made anymore and I seriously doubt you're going to find one I recommend you seriously consider a repower
omega_rugal
if you have the 2.8 shouldn´t a GM auto tranny work? get a complete 4.0+aw4+tcase combo from an XJ, you current setup will be difficult to upgrade...
kryptronic
94 and 95 YJ 2.5L were available with the TF904. Jeep didn't produce many YJ optioned like this, though.

Where did people get the idea he has a 2.8L? He has stated that he has a 1987 2.5L 2WD. That means whatever he uses has to have provision for a CPS, and the flex plate has to be Renix-compatible. Are we all on the same page now?

Yes, but the 2.8L V6 didn't use a crankshaft position sensor. The '87 2.5L used the Renix throttle body injection system and it uses the same CPS as the Renix 4.0Ls. Or for anyone who is equally confused. I'm the one that mentioned the 1986. I have seen ONE 1986 MJ with the 2.5 and the 904, ONE, not many, ONE. I have not seen, nor heard of, nor read about any other year in which an MJ was produced with a 2.5 and a 904. If one exists, it's that rare. Many XJ and MJs were produced in 1986 with the 2.8 and the 904. I brought this up in case the OP has a buddy who says "hey, I know where one is that will bolt up", only to come back here to ask why his engine won't run and what's this wire and plug for? In any case, he won't find the parts anyway..........wasted my time, I guess. Maybe I should post in crayon?

Jeep Driver
Same search, you can actually read this one. One looks promising, but he still needs the flex plate. $725 plus freight and then no guarantees, must factor a rebuild. Diminishing returns. He stated in his first post that he has an 87 . Anyhow , if they have the trans .... they had the truck .... and they have the flexplate etc And I can read mine just fine .... Of course you can, it's in your browser, I'm on a large screen and I can't read it. 904 in the 86, no TCM. Apparently some did come with the AW4 after 87, now you can include adding the TCM to the flexplate and the rest of his misfortune. Why am I speaking out against this move? Some of you are more than happy to cheerlead a man right down a rat's hole. It's a dumb move, waste of money and effort. Assuming he accumulated all the right parts the first time, and those are good parts. Mount, cooling lines, cooler, shifter, fluids, flex plate, TCM, wiring, drive shaft.........misc............etc, minimum $1600 or more. And then if a rebuild? out it comes and add $1000. And for what? behind a clapped out 2.5?
Strokermjcomanche
I had an 87 2.5 aw4 2wd MJ (also had A/C ) , it ran great down the freeway / downtown/etc nothing wrong with that truck by any means . I fail to see where he posted that he was street racing on the weekends and wanted more power , why can't he do what he wants to his own truck ?????? To the OP , no reason you couldn't be into that swap for $500 , where do you live ?
Jeep Driver
https://knoxville.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=comanche&sort=rel This is what my CL has looked like for the last two years, you can search Cherokee also and it looks about the same, much of nothing in about a 200 mile radius.
