Front Tow Hooks

Recommended Posts

I found some tow hooks at TSC the other day, almost identical to factory from what little I have seen of factory ones. What I need from you guys that have front hooks are pics. I need to see what the bracket looks like and where/how the hooks/brackets are mounted. I can't get my hands on any factory hooks or brackets so I thought I could take pics of the factory ones and make some close to them that would work with these hooks.

Here are the ones I bought:

http://www.reeseprod.com/fitguides/details.asp?ProdID=63030&dlr=0

There are also chrome ones (TSC didn't have or I would have bought these)

So all you out there with factory hooks, help me out here.

Alex

I've got a used set, a little bit rusted, but should work fine.

You'll just need to get the nuts and bolts to install them.

I'll let ya have them, for $15 plus shipping.

Let me know, John

Brackets too or just hooks? Because I already bought those hooks, but if I can get a set of factory ones with brackets I'm sure I can return em.

I have a whole box of chrome tow hooks. Specs for these are 1/2" holes 1-1/2" apart. Work just fine w. the factory brackets. PM me if you want a set Alex.

i HAD the rusty's towhooks and brackets and they did awesome... set-up almost exactly like that factory one, runs back along the frame

but they got fubar-ed when i smacked an accord at 25mph. however they saved the entire front end of my truck from any damage... they took full impact and bent/broke a LITTLE bit.

At http://www.jeeperz-creeperz.com I found "XJ Front Tow Hook Kit" for $73.

According to the Jeep parts manual, the Comanche, Wagoneer. and Cherokee use the same bracket and hooks. I just recently got an '88 Comanche Laredo 4x4 on the road and am looking to install a set of front hooks. The illustration on the Jeeperz-Creeperz website looks simular to the photos in this thread. Anyone ever try the "Cherokee" brackets on a Comanchee?

There is no difference between "Cherokee" brackets and "Comanche" brackets.

Keystone Automotive used to offer XJ/MJ tow hook brackets. They were near duplicates of the originals, except that don't have the second set of holes to set the brackets forward 4" for the hidden winch option -- which nobody ever uses, so you'll never miss it. If you dig deep, a LOT of the after-market body parts places have these same brackets, and they're CHEAP.

Don't get anything but c4x4 brackets. Everything else does not have the side supports and WILL bend if pulled via the side at all.

X2!! I love my C4X4 brackets/hooks. I have bent them slighty, but thats just from hitting rocks with them. I'd buy them again if I had to choose again. Great (cheaper) alternative to a full bumper.

So then you can't use a bumper with c4x4 brackets?

Yes you can use any factory bumper and 95% of any aftermarket bumpers with the C4x4 brackets.

Those don't tie into the rear good enough for my liking. I just don't think that the mounting setup is the best. They need the rear frame tie-in that goes all the way threw like others (c4x4 and factory ones) have.

Actually there are three tie bolts per side that do go through the frame with backing plates for these brackets. And the drivers side bracket incorporates the steering box bolts. They are solid. One improvement would be to weld a piece of box channel across the front to tie the two brackets together. I think MJeff suggested that in a previous post.

Yeah, I'm using a factory tow bar mount on mine that I found on an XJ in the junkyard. It bolts up to the factory brackets, sandwiched between the brackets and the hooks, and runs across the lower header panel.

I was referring to the rear tie-in. The front 2 only go threw a very thin sandwiched piece of metal, the 3rd one goes threw the "frame" on the pass side and only into the steering box on the drivers side. The extra bolt I was referring to is further back (see photo). Photo is of the C4x4 winch bumper mount but they are identical as far as the mounting goes.

And here is the photo of the side support brace (L bracket) I keep refering to that the C4x4 hooks have that not many other brands do. It helps keep the bracket from bending during side pulls. You can also see in this photo what the front 2 bolts actually go threw. Thier simply is no support there without the added side bracket that c4x4 offers.

He's modified the brackets to use the rear through bolt. Here's a pic I took before bolting in the sway bar bushings. The front two bolts are the steering box box bolts, the rear goes through the "frame". The other side has two bolts through the frame.
