  1. Like Disorder says, the best place is the middle of the roof. Since you don't want to drill a hole, and you don't want to see an antenna in the rear view, a Mag Mount is your best option IMO. Run the coax thru the top of the rear window or devise another route. Like Disorder, I've been licensed a long time (since 1973) and have the FCC Commercial License. It was called the First Class license but now it's called the General Radiotelephone Operators License.
  2. $300. But at least the it's apart now. Tranny is in the truck bed My bad, I should have mentioned 4x4 I was under the impression Cherokees of the same vintage would work for engine and tranny. Correct me if I'm wrong. The shop I had it at didn't seem to realize this and really didn't want to mess with it. If there is something I have learned in life, if somebody doesn't want to work on something, it's best to hire someone who does. As far as replacement tranny, there are bone yards around that have this stuff. I had "my guy" who did a lot of work on the Comanche about 5 years ago. He knew what he was doing, had a well equipped shop nest to his house, very reasonable, and only 2 miles from my home. Unfortunately, his health was beginning to fail then and he's no longer doing auto work. So, I'm still looking for that someone who can do the swap.
  3. Who works on a Jeep Comanche in the Grand Rapids, MI area? Here's the deal. I have a 1988 Jeep Comanche Pickup that needs transmission work, automatic transmission. I took it to a transmission shop in Lowell (where I actually live) who went so far as to tear it down. The transmission needs rebuilding, the flywheel is chewed up, and an oil seal on the engine is bad. It became obvious at this point the shop realllllly doesn't care so much to work on older vehicles. Been there, done that, so I paid them for the work done and got the vehicle back home. So now I'm looking for someone who does and wants to work an older Jeep. I am a paying customer and not in any hurry. Let me qualify the not in a hurry as I know all to well how the time vs. effort inverse ratio works. I would want it back in time for the annual Forest Cleanup in mid-April! That should be plenty of time. So, do you or do you know of anyone who would like the job? TIA. If I can't find anybody, then I may part it out come spring. Jack
  4. I got an '88 Comanche with NO keys, in fact, the ignition cylinder was gone, used needle nose pliers to start the thing. Nobody knew where the keys disappeared to and nothing could be looked up from the VIN#. Purchased a new ignition cylinder w/keys from NAPA. Purchased new door locks w/keys from teamcomanche.com First time I ever changed door locks, was not difficult at all. Someday I'll get the glove box lock rekeyed. Life is good now
  5. The yard owner stated his price and conditions (no title or tranny), the customer walked! What's to report? People complaining to the state over stuff like this is why we end up with laws that make no sense! In this case, capitalism worked, let it be.
  6. Unless the radiator is too far gone, a radiator shop should be able to clean it out.
  7. I have an '88 Comanche, a previous owner replaced the rear bumper with a 2x6. At least they painted it black! Anyway, in looking for a replacement, I found the following websites with bumpers: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com http://www.carpartswholesale.com http://www.partstrain.com I haven't purchased/installed one yet so I can't verify anything about these sources or products.
  8. I'm replacing speakers in my '88. I measured 4"x6" for front and back. The front speakers are in tact but the rear speakers and grills are missing, wires still there. The radio was missing as well but I picked up a Jeep AM-FM Cassette w/digital tuner/clock at a flea market for $10 that works great and fits perfectly, including the speaker/power connectors. I just ordered two sets of speakers w/grills from MCM Electronics a couple days ago. http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/51-1102 I should have them by this next weekend and will post how mounting goes. Hopefully I didn't mess up the front dimensions as Pete M measures 5-1/4".
  9. Thanks for the link. I tried the search function, either I get no returns or 300+. I'm going to have to see if there is some search engine suggestions somewhere on this forum I tried using a hammer w/long metal rod to pound out the one still in the manafold. Tried heating up with a torch. No joy. As it is, the stud was in OK shape, would have preferred to replace both though. A new stud went in where the missing one was without hassle. I hear you. Could have been worse, no longer available. Having said all that, I have an extra stud if someone needs it. Exhaust system replaced. Driving just fine. Thanks everyone!
  10. I'm having to replace the exhaust system on my '88 Comanche, 4.0 6cy. Where the exhaust pipe connects to the exhaust outlet on the engine manifold, there are two press fit studs. Sometime in the vehicle's history, one of the studs had been replaced with a plain bolt and nut, the other appears to be original. I have picked up two new studs for this project. My questions are: Is there some trick or "procedure" to removing the remaining stud? Is there some trick or "procedure" to install and press fit new studs? TIA
  11. Thanks everyone. I'll likely just order new locks.
  12. Before I begin a new thread, since this is directly related, I'll inquire here. I have a 1988 Comanche Laredo that I got with no keys. I replaced the missing ignition switch, but need to do something about the doors. Chrysler/Jeep no longer has the key code record for my VIN#. Do I need to replace the locks or is there a way to determine the key cut I need. Thanks.
  13. Thanks for the info. Looks like the c4x4 brackets w/ D-Rings are the way to go.
  14. At http://www.jeeperz-creeperz.com I found "XJ Front Tow Hook Kit" for $73. http://www.jeeperz-creeperz.com/front-hook-p-6752.html?osCsid=412f9219257e00599d35a650f7dc07e5 According to the Jeep parts manual, the Comanche, Wagoneer. and Cherokee use the same bracket and hooks. I just recently got an '88 Comanche Laredo 4x4 on the road and am looking to install a set of front hooks. The illustration on the Jeeperz-Creeperz website looks simular to the photos in this thread. Anyone ever try the "Cherokee" brackets on a Comanchee?
