G00SE
As I've already discussed in a previous thread I purchased a 1989 MJ going on about a month ago, drove it today about 10miles and while driving it I stopped by some of the kinfolks house and noticed a small puddle of oil underneath around where the transmission is and thought I've got a transmission leak problem but after getting home it looks as though its not transmission fluid and is looking like its a oil leaking problem. Can I replace the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine? and if thats not the culprit can the rear main seal be replaced without pulling the engine and dropping the crank? Thanks for any help in advance, G00SE Sent from my LGLS990 using Tapatalk
Gene
Hi Goose, You might want to search through the forums. There are many, many causes for oil leaks, and they all look like it's coming from rear main seal… Cruisers tip may be helpful http://cruiser54.com/?p=96 Good luck! 75sv1
Could be the grill is in the natural 'Jeep' position. The rest of it ain't. As to oil leaks, start with the valve cover. I used the rubber Felpro gasket, the $30-$50 one. Or use the good RTV. The cork ones don't seem to hold up. Next, would be the Oil Filter housing. Again get the FelPro kit. Although the 'bolt' orings seemed wrong size. Then the Oil pan gasket and rear main seal. Helps to install a 4.5" lift. Then the oil pan slides right out. Also, the front timing cover might be before the Oil pan.
cruiser54
I’d be looking up ABOVE first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak YOURSELF. Everybody, who doesn’t own or have to pay for or perform your vehicle repairs, loves to poke their noggin UNDER the Jeep and come out bearing the false bad news that your RMS is leaking. Many mechanics, friends, and good old Uncle Bob seem to enjoy telling you it’s the rear main seal. Has a catastrophic ring to it, doesn’t it? A simple leak at the back of the valve cover or other source could produce the same symptoms. You don’t need to be a mechanic to figure this out. If you have good eyesight and a dim flashlight, you’re good to go on your own. Don’t jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon right off the bat. Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for two simple reasons: First off, the engine sits nose-up and any oil will run back to the RMS area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber’s adage apply here: “Crap flows downhill”. Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket, in that order, have to be eliminated as possibilities first. G00SE
I had actually already flipped the grill around when I put new headlamps in a few weeks ago when I was putting in back I noticed that it look like it was upside down then. But thats very observant that anyone would've noticed it in the previous pictures because I thought when I was re-installing it that I had turned it around when I trying to put back together..lol Sent from my LGLS990 using Tapatalk
