Xdt Posted June 4, 2017 Share Posted June 4, 2017 Guys, I have an 87 4.0 5 speed 4wd. When I apply brakes the front right side of the truck vibrates. I replaced the rotors and pads and problem remains. There are times while braking at speeds above 50mph I can feel vibration in the shifter. However the steering wheel feels fine. I took the truck to NTB for an evaluation but they could not find root cause. It appears that the problem could be in the drive train but I am not sure. SVPete Posted June 5, 2017 Share Posted June 5, 2017 If you feel a vibration through your shifter, I recommend to check the transmission mount. If it is original, it likely has rotted into pieces. If you feel a twist when you take off in first, definitely check the mount. I don't think that would have anything to do with the vibration you feel in the front right side though.... I have not replaced calipers or ball joints. So before I throw more money at the problem, I will inspect hubs and control arms. Keep the suggestions coming. HOrnbrod Posted June 5, 2017 Share Posted June 5, 2017 A good way to check ball joints is to jack up one side at a time just high enough to slide a 2x4 from the side under the tire, and have a helper lift it up and down while you're under there eyeballing and have a hand on both the upper and lower ball joints. DirtyComanche Posted June 5, 2017 Share Posted June 5, 2017 At this point I'd say ball joints most likely. Wheel bearing maybe. Tire/wheel or shock issue is also possible. And there's a good chance both your tranny and motor mounts are worn/torn/smooshed, not that it's likely giving you the vibration during braking. And Don's method of checking ball joints is good. 2x4 or a big pry bar. You gotta really put some effort into them to feel them. If the boots are torn, they look dry, there's rusty powder streaking out of them, etc, just change them. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

NC Tom Posted September 15, 2017 Share Posted September 15, 2017 Adding life to this topic. I too have a bad vibration when braking hard or above 45 mph. I have new shocks to install soon. However, if it's just the front rotors, what would be preferred, turning or replacing? And, other than bushings, ball-joints and shocks, what other suspension components should be looked at? I haven't had rotors turned for years though. It seems that job has gone the way of the dinosaurs much like rebuilding starters and alternators has.......
