DirtyComanche
Sometime in the mid to late 90s I believe this became required (along with 3rd brake lights....I bet your granada doesn't have one of those either). Every new car sold in the US has either an arrow or an indicator of some sort identifying for the poor young drivers of today where the "gas thingy" goes, along with a warning that it will give them cancer in Kommiefornia (ok, that last part I made up but it sure sounds good). Yup. And consult the warning labels on the inside of the sun visor for more information on causing cancer in California... I'm sure it's in that wall of text along with the 8 million air bag related warnings. If not, it will be in the owner's manual, which is 300 pages of warning statements that the legal team worked very hard on.
gogmorgo
It sure would be convenient if the fill doors were always on the same side... The Niva's is on the passenger side. I put 5600 miles on it in the last two weeks, having not driven it for a while, needless to say I did have to think pretty hard a couple times, and did pull in on the wrong side more than once but realized my mistake before getting out. Then once I got home, first thing I did in the MJ was pull up to the pump on the wrong side. Herp derp. While having it on the driver's side may be more convenient, having it on the passenger's side forces you to walk all the way around, so you can get a visual on that side of the vehicle. This allowed me to keep an eye on a tire that picked up a nail without going out of my way. I wouldn't really have much other reason to look at that side of the car otherwise. Ωhm
Passenger side fuel fill also helps keep the idiot, when its not you, or the poor soul when it is, out of traffic when adding a gallon of fuel to their vehicle on the side of the road. I do like driver side fuel fill though.
gogmorgo
Forgot to mention that as well. I've certainly *cough* never *coughcough* had the pleasure *coughwheezhack* of standing five feet away from interstate traffic dribbling gas into anything. Nope, never. ...gas stations are sometimes hundreds of miles apart around here, at least at night.

Considering my '92 MJ is my newest vehicle of 8 other than my motorcycle and Mazdaspeed 3 (which is for sale)......I just have to remember. And yes, I too have pull up to the wrong side and stretched the hose over the trunk. $HlT happens.... You're right, it doesn't. It doesn't have a lot of things. Like power, or a clock or even a passanger side mirror but worst of all.... no cup holders. If you drive an automatic, just hold it between ya legs!!! Nope!! You don't want to hold hot coffee that way. Mc Donalds got sued by some woman who did that with here hot coffee and got burned! So now McDonalds coffee cups have a warning printed on the coffee cup. Next time you are there, check out the warning.

The actually dumped it in her lap as they handed it to her in the paper cup holder thingy. The woman was in her 80s and the coffee pot was set to 205 or 208 deg F. Those burn pictures are hard to forget..... Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk

gogmorgo
Cup holders weren't really a thing until the early 80's (or later, I'd have to check), which is when our trucks were designed. I've used a boot in the passenger footwell, and I've also successfully juggled a cup in my Niva, either between my legs or in my hand, while driving stick with no power steering. It wasn't easy but you can do it if you set your mind to it... of course I may have spilled a bit. And yeah, that woman who sued McDick's, she got third degree burns from it. No, those photos weren't pretty.

pitbull4x4
I'm old enough to of had a car where you had to pull down the license plate to put gas in it. So the gas gauge only said fuel. No picture of pump on it. Kids now a days would be lost.
Ωhm
Wasn't it Buick Riviera (mid 60's) that had fuel fill behind the fold out tail lamp assembly? From my days as a fuel pump jockey.

My dad had a 56 chevy and my uncle had a 55 chevy - at least one of those had the fuel filler behind the tail lamp. Think it was my dad's 56. Ωhm
Yea, you just took 10 years off my life. 57 Chevy had the fold out hinged chrome piece at the end of the fin.

GM I think started the cap behind the tail light craze with the 52 Caddys. Then some Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs got the hidden gas filler treatment too. Can't think of any Ford or Chrysler cars in that era that had them behind a tail lamp or piece of chrome though.......
dante2
The YJ's still have to drop the license plate to fill.
Tex06
Lincoln started with the behind the license plate if I recall correctly. Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk
