Smog/emissions delete???

ok so let me start of by saying that i live in texas and emissions isnt required on anything 25 or older. the next part and the main reason i want information on removing all the emission parts besides eliminating clutter, is I'm going to be putting a Eaton M90 Supercharger on my 87 MJ in the coming months. and most of that stuff won't do any good under boost. has any one removed all of their emission parts?  any tips? ive heard the Renix don't run well without it. ive pulled emission stuff off other cars before and noticed no difference.

the ball is for the vacuum operated stuff (ac controls and such, 4x4 engament on some models) you can remove it and leave only the MAP sensor and fuel pressure regulator conected but then anything that is vacuum actuated won`t work

 

the charcoal canister can be removed but you will be smelling gasoline all day, not good thing to do while driving

well ill be re doing the fuel system so the charcoal can go to and no ac ect and my 4x4 isnt vacuum controlled so I'm good there. as far as the regulator goes, I'm having a custom fuel rail made so i can mount a boost referenced FPR. but cool looks like i know what I'm doing Saturday!! lol

The vacuum also changes the vents in side the cab. So if you want to go from vent to defrost it will not work, that is vacuum. The ball does not weight enough to really worry about that type of stuff, unless it is cracked and leaking. Legally in Texas your defroster has to work under inspection. Now do they inspect it, No.

 

I have inspection only vehicles too in Texas. However every now and then they do the gas cap check. With out the charcoal can plugged in it will suck a bit of air and fail that part of the test. Make sure to put a breather in place of the can. 4 years ago they did it to my 87 MJ, but have not did it since. Other then the EGR nothing else is a drag on the system and weight is not enough to effect anything. Just hollow your cat, Cat must be on in Texas for vision check only. DPS or troopers will give you fix it ticket if they give you a thru out check on a pull over if your missing cat.

 

The EGR is easy to disconnect without even doing much, just unplugging the vacuum to the actuator on the left wall and it will not use the EGR. Of course you can take the EGR off put a cap on intake and plug whole on exhaust manifold.

The hole for the EGR in the intake manifold is already the correct size for IIRC a 3/8" NPT tap.  Or maybe 1/2".  One way or another it's super easy to delete cleanly between that and using a HO header without the EGR bung in it.

 

You shouldn't smell gas much (or at all) if you delete the charcoal canister and run a vent, just make sure you leave the restricting orifice in the line.  My XJ is set up that way.  But if you don't need to ditch the charcoal canister then it isn't hurting anything, as said.

As Nori mentioned, the heat/vent controls are vacuum operated. So is your 4WD, but there are ways to get around that.

We don't test the defroster. technically, the windshield itself isn't even a testable item. The gas cap pressure test is done on the cap itself, with the cap removed from the vehicle. But like you said, once  a vehicle hits 25 years old, (1992 this year) It's exempt from the emission and gas cap checks. However, the law states that any emission equipment installed at the factory must be present, and in good working order. No-one checks for this, though. If we did, headers, open-element air cleaners, etc would cause alot cars going back to the early 70's to fail.

Like Ataki Mention most of the testers, never even check anything other then lights and emergency brake. The guy I take too for the past 20 years, on exempt vehicles never lifts the hood. If vehicle is high enough he looks to see if there is a cat installed. Other then that Horn, All out side lights, blinkers, and emergency brake.

 

Anything out side of that stuff you can do and pass. The EGR delete, hollow out cat, and Capping off all vacuum but the map, and Brake booster line your good. The Truck will run fine. You can always run a straight vacuum line to the heat vent inside if you want air to flow like normal function. That way all the stuff you want to clean up can be cleaned up.

 

Just don't remove the cat housing, I was pulled over a few years ago, and the trooper did a full check, and gave me a fix it for a removed cat on a 1977 Chevy. I just put a hollowed out one on, and took in to get ticket written off. However not worth the hassle, when you can just hollow and leave hosing on.

ya i don't plan on messing with exhaust right now, besides summit racing sells plenty of high flow cats cheap ill go to one of thos eventually, as far as heaters ect, none of it works i don't even have controls for any of it all my safety gear works though. I'm not to concerned with passing. the place i go to passed my xj last year with one headlight and only 3 shocks XD i just want to clean up the engine bay and don't want to cause negative running conditions. the supercharger is just a pet project for this year. next year I'm going to build a 350 sb and a 700r4 to put in it, hopefully the engine last until then lol

I am not a big ole tree-hugger, but wasn't that pollution control equipment put on for a reason? To control pollution, right? What are you really gaining by removing/bypassing it besides contributing to a problem?

you regain a few HP that the emissions steal... a clean up the mess of hoses and stuff...

 

all comanches are at least 25 years old, not so many on the road anyway, some pollution is not going to hurt anyone... just kidding...

Both EGR and PURGE (fuel canister) are sub-systems that deal with fuel vapors. When either one or both are activated, they add fuel to the delivery. In return INJ PW time is lessened. Keep in mind these are minute calculations, but none the less, part of the engine strategy. Not sure if O2s will compensate over time for this lean condition.
