cruiser54
Keep in mind the heater control valve gets eliminated. That's a bonus.
HOrnbrod
No bleeding needed. And, I found with the aluminum tank that Hordbrod favors, there is no was to see the level without removing the cap. That's what the 2.5 Overflow bottle is for. Keep in mind the heater control valve gets eliminated. That's a bonus. Although eliminating that valve should be done, it's not p/o the cooling system conversion.
Knucklehead97
I did the closed to open swap on my other MJ and removed the heater valve, I actually consider it a good thing to remove so the heater core doesn't get clogged as easily. Just on my other MJ I used a brand new open style radiator :D
Eagle
A potential issue with swapping to an "open" type radiator in a Renix 4.0L is that most of the new style radiators don't have a bung for the temperature sensor that controls the auxiliary fan. 48MJ
Check the bolts on the thermostat housing. One time I mixed them up and the one from the passenger side was to long for the blind hole on the drivers side. It turned out to be just barely to long and would not let it tighten the gasket but looked good till you would start it then it would leak. It turned out to be just barely to long and would not let it tighten the gasket but looked good till you would start it then it would leak. I was thinking this is EXACTLY what happened. Ill figure out tomorrow when I change the gasket. If it seals, then I will be buying it and ordering the parts for the open swap. Going to see if he'll let me install the parts in his yard so that I can just drive it home instead of paying a tow company. So which bolt goes where? Long one in the top? It's been a bit since I did it, just remember them being different.
DirtyComanche
If you thread the bolts in by hand with the tstat housing off, and then compare to the housing, it becomes immediately apparent which way they go. Sorry I can't tell you for sure, I just can't quite visualize it.
Knucklehead97
Got it all done today. Not only was the housing cracked but the thermostat fell and didnt let the housing seat completely. Went and bought a new housing for the heck of it. No leaks now! Except for the cap on the pressure bottle, of course. I talked to the guy and if I buy it then I can order the parts to make it an open cooling system and install them in his front yard so I can hopefully drive it home. I got to hear it idle for about 20 minutes today. Sounded great. A little bit of a wandering idle but nothing bad. No signs of a headgasket leak so the overheating is most likely the lack of pressure cause of the pressure bottles cap. Do you guys think I should buy it? I personally think I'm going to. I can't think of anything else that could be causing it to overheat. The only bad part is from what we know the little "overheating" dummy light doesn't work. I wouldn't be able to tell if it was overheating on the road. Open to all opinions. Going to go ahead and gather all the parts for the open swap so when the title comes back I can get it. If you all agree with me that it's worth it, that is.
Knucklehead97
After thinking it over all day today... I believe that I am definitely buying it. Messaging the guy now to tell him to tell me as soon as the title comes back. Also have a Moroso inline filler coming in the mail. I'll keep ya'll posted after I get the Jeep in my name. Thanks a bunch, as always!

A 40-micron stainless steel filter element is utilized.NOTE: Not recommended for high-pressure fuel injection systems.
DirtyComanche
He said 'filler' not 'filter.' :laughin: I believe he means something like this: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Inline-Die-Cast-Filler-Neck-1-5-Inch-Hose,9010.html Which allows you to run a rad cap even if your radiator doesn't have provisions for one. I used one of these on my old MJ when I went to a remote rad, since I was still using the Renix rad.

88mjblue
Very excited for you! Congratulations! I think you'll be happy with it, and as others have said, a $1k MJ in that condition is definitely worth it, even without an engine! I had a similar problem getting the thermostat housing to seal properly. Had everything buttoned up after converting to open system and then it leaked out of the thermostat housing/gasket after I started it up. Trick is to get it centered and make sure the gasket doesn't shift when putting it on, and then torquing down the bolts evenly. And yes, overtorquing can crack the thermostat housing, which he managed to do! Funny about the water outlet - he must be a chevy guy, that's what they call thermostat housings. I was confused when I first heard someone call a tstat housing a "water outlet." They also say rocker arm cover instead of valve cover (which actually makes more sense if you think about it). Go through cruiser's renix tips and you'll fix that idle.

Knucklehead97
I also ordered a set of Volvo injectors. Love the ones I have in my other Jeep, couldn't turn down the price.
Knucklehead97
The title finally came back. Monday afternoon I will be going up there with cash and open system swap parts and hopefully bringing her home! Pics to come.
Knucklehead97
As promised, pictures! After I did the open cooling swap, she seems to be doing great! Drove her home and she drove amazingly. So far, I have just over 1100$ in her. I'm very pleased. Cosmetically the only big issue is this. He was hit while sitting in a parking lot and it bowed out the fender some, not a big issue though. The other issues are that I hear a scraping sound when the brakes are not being applied, guessing somethings dragging a little bit. Dissapears as soon as you hit the prdal though. And there is a squeaking coming from the belt all of a sudden, it's not a squeal, just a squeak that gets faster with the engine. Kind of went away after awhile though. Otherwise the Jeep seems to be great. Definitely putthing that WJ booster/mc in, though...

FrankTheDog
Nice rig. You got a good deal. I'd pay what you paid for a jeep that clean with out a drivetrain. But then I have four drivetrains in stock. Lol

Usually people selling vehicles in this state think their junk is gold plated. Congrats - . not far from the Harbor Freight in Albertville/Boaz. I'm just outside of Attalla so it wasn't far at all for me to drive. I got really lucky by knowing about the cooling systems in these Jeeps because that's the only way I managed to get it for 1000$. The guy was tired of spending money trying to fix the leak/overheating problem and it was such a simple, cheap, fix. I kind of felt bad about it! Thanks guys :D interior/engine pics will be up this afternoon.
Knucklehead97
There we go! Super clean underneath. Not a speck of mud! And the leaf springs look really new... I don't know if they were replaced or not. And I had to get a picture of both MJ's together. Oh and how do ya'll like the expensive Jolly Rancher soda overflow bottle? Lol had to improvise. Going to try to start a build thread soon. Currently working on getting the new dome lights installed. Gotta change the tires before I start driving it around, these are very dry rotted.
