My fuel tank leaks after filling more than 3/4 , gasket has been replaced twice and it still leaks and it's getting annoying. I have a new mopar seal this time waiting to be installed What tips/advice do you Guys have for replacing the seal .

Here's how the lock ring is sitting as of now , it looks a little odd to me but i can't tell what's wrong

Looks like the ring isn't locked in on the right side.

X2, get a brass punch and turn the lock ring clockwise, I would suggest lubing it with a little grease so you won't damage the seal

To me it looks like the top plate of the sending unit is not centered under the lock ring, thus the right side won't lock down.

And yeah, it is a TOTAL PITA to deal with that thing under the truck.

The three times I've messed with the tanks/pumps/sending units I've ended up dropping the tank

instead of the continued fight.  For me I think I saved time and did a better job in the end.

Good Luck!

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the comment. About 10 years ago I changed the gas tank, no problem dealing with the lock ring with the tank out.

Last year I changed the fuel pump...Didn't remove the tank....I don't think I got the the lock ring very tight...so I have not filled the tank over 3/4 full.

Much much easier with the tank out of the vehicle. But I had a full tank of gas when I changed the fuel pump...

Thanks

You can't over tighten the lock ring. They have 3 little tabs that press against the 3 hold downs on the tank itself. Tap it with a hammer till these touch and 99% of the time you will be perfect.

If these aren't touching them (or really close) its not on all the way. It may still work, but its not right.

I recently made a tool for this purpose. Haven't used it in a real life situation yet, but mailed it to a buddy on another forum to try out. It's made of another old Jeep part. Guess the part.
