D44 question

Recommended Posts

For direct fit into an MJ, only an MJ, from 1987 through 1992, with 4.0L automatic and the metric ton or trailer tow package.

XJs from 1987 through approximately 1992 (??), with the 4.0L and automatic, and the optional suspension and/or tow package. These will be the correct width, but you'll have to move the spring perches.

There are no other vehicles with a Dana 44 axle that's both the correct width and the correct 5x4-1/2" bolt circle.

What about the TJ D44? Thought they were the same width as the MJ/XJ axle. I know the bolt pattern's the same.....

TJ axles will work just need to remove all the four link mounting.

As far as XJ's with 44 rears, 1987 is the only year where they were used mostly. They may have been used in later years but I and a bunch of other people that mess with them I know have never seen one.

Most commonly found in 1987 XJ wagoneers with the towing package.

If you see a woodgrained cherokee with a trailer hitch, stop and look under the back of it. If it's an 87 there's a good chance it'll have a 44.

The only XJ D44 I've found was in an 87 Wagoneer.

I look under every Cherokee and Comanche to see if I find a 44...you never know if any of the stock vehicles has had axle swaps....

I even spin the wheels to try and find a trac-lok or a locker

Yes, but the wheel bolt pattern is different (6 on 5.5). Same with the Honda Passport.

The Honda Passport is a Rodeo with a Honda badge.

In any case, you won't find 3.55 gears under a Rodeo/Passport with the 44.  Almost all of them were 4.10 or 4.30 gears. I have a Rodeo Dana 44 with 4.30's and limited slip that I shortened to put under my Isuzu Impulse.

What about the 44s that came under the isuzu rodeos won't those have a similar width?

As I recall the Isusu Rodeo/Honda Passport axel is 1 inch narrower than the Comanche.  It also has 6 wheel bolts and factory disk brakes.  The automatic V6 versions had the 4.10 axle and the manual trans V6 had a 4.30 axle.  I used to own one of each.
