WNY-J24 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Does anyone here have a full bench in their 5 speed MJ? You lose the cutout for cup holder builds but otherwise it looks like it might just fit. Has anyone done this? Are there major issues I am not thinking about?

There is different styles of bench seats ,one has a cutout and the other doesn't . If you have a column shift 2wd you shouldn't have the cutout . If you have the floor shift , 5spd or it's 4wd it will have the cutout .try to find one with the cutout . If you move the seat forward it will hit the mini console .
WNY-J24 Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 I have an extra bench from an auto column shifter. So it has no cutout. I am trying to see if I can shoehorn it into my 5 speed mj

I seem to remember something about certain export models with this configuration...........

WNY-J24 Posted January 9, 2016 Author Posted January 9, 2016 None came factory this way but I was just hoping someone might build their mj this way, so I would know it was possible.

I am trying to see if I can shoehorn it into my 5 speed mj Best and quickest thing to answer the question is just to give it a try. Just unbolt your existing bench seat, put the other bench seat in. You don't even have to bolt it in, just place it in and see how it fits. Then post some pictures! That way others will know when this question comes up in another year or so. Not sure how much will be gained because the gear shift will still be in the way for the middle seat passenger. Unless the middle seat is being used for a baby seat.
Minuit Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I've seen a few '86 MJs with a column shift Don. They have the indicator on the column like your truck. There's a pic in here: http://comancheclub.com/topic/49003-ny-1986-lwb-28-v6-part-out-36k-miles/?do=findComment&comment=500874
HOrnbrod Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I meant a manual "three on the tree" column shifter in an MJ or XJ. I know some J-trucks had them, and I thought I read somewhere that certain export model XJs or MJs had a similar setup. I had several 60s-70s Fords and Chevies with three-on-the-tree, and they were a blast to drive. I remember you had to double-clutch them to downshift.........
Strokermjcomanche Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 My friend had a three on the tree on his 87 c1500 Chevy , I think that was the end of the era ...
Streetwedg Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 All xj's had floor shifters. Only the mj's were available with columb shift. There were no three speed Manuels in any xj or mj.
HOrnbrod Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Columb? Police / government package XJs had optional column shifters. Try to not use blanket statements about Jeeps because they are seldom blankets.

Streetwedg Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Sorry , I forgot about the police pkg. i worked the assembly line as a repair man. Fixed cars as they were built. Probably forgot more than I remember.

I have the full bench but I built myself a custom centor console wth cup holders and switch panel
mikekaz1 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Just curious on why you want the straight front bench so badly? Compared to the notched one. I can't imagine there's any noticeable difference other then aesthetic OCD.
WNY-J24 Posted January 10, 2016 Author Posted January 10, 2016 I have a straight bench that is much nicer then my cutout bench but I have a 5 speed. Just hoping to see someone else already did it that's all. Thanks for the input all.
outlaw star Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I have a straight bench but am 6' tall w/beach all the way back.
NorthWoods Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 A non cutout bench will totally work with a manual trans as long as the seat is not slid forward all of the way. Even then it will work just when your in 2nd,4th or reverse your shifter will be very close to the bench seat.
88whitemanche Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 My custom prp bench in my 89 short bed Man that prp bench looks GOOD! I was looking into their buckets for the Comanche... Does it involve a lot of custom work?
Lee21490 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 My first mj was an 86 5 speed 2.8l with a full bench. It didnt come with a shift console though, ended up screwing down a matt and a shift boot to make it look nice-er
