OK. I do have several WJ's and have not gotten this letter...but:

 

Just from what I have read it appears to be a law firm who is trying to gather information on a class action suit. Am I incorrect?

Not really . The purpose of the letter is to install a hitch on certain Wjs especially with aftermarket hitches because iirc the aftermarket hitches may puncture the gas tank in a rear end collision because of how low they sit vs the mopar hitch that is the same height as the bumper . The replacement parts won't be available till September 15th at the earliest . I think if the law firm was collecting info the dealer wouldn't be installing hitches .

OK...Sounds good. But: Why would the manufacturer be responsible to replacing aftermarket hitches the owner decided to install? Don't get me wrong - I'm all for free stuff, but how could the manufacturer be responsible?

Chrysler is getting hit real hard about the ZJ,WJ and KJ fuel tanks.

Their initial effort on getting the vehicles recalled and inspected was deemed insufficiant by the NHSTA.

Chrysler had to step up their effort to get the vehicles in and repaired.

NHSTA basically said that your jeep is about the same as an early Pinto is for rear crash worthiness.

Simple.

 

All it would take is one "Pinto Kid" to cost Jeep gazillions of bucks. If the aftermarket hitches pose a danger of puncturing the gas tank and starting a fire (or causing an explosion), the downside for Chrysler/Jeep is almost infinite. The cost of replacing a few trailer hitches will be peanuts compared to what one Pinto Kid lawsuit would cost them.

I too got the letter for our WJ's. None have a hitch, so the recall is a moot point for us.

 

However, I do want to say my daughter's was hit in the rear several weeks ago by a Volvo at 45-55 MPH and the gas tank did not rupture against the axle. It did develop a leak due to the Volvo riding under the bumper and holing it. While I understand and agree that Ford's decision process with the Pinto was flawed (mostly due to arrogance and monetary factors) as Incommando said, the WJ passed the requirements for the time and it is somewhat unrealistic to expect it to pass more stringent regulation 10 years later.

 

The Crown VIctoria police interceptor is a prime example as well. Initially it was deemed safe but later tests (and larger vehicles) were found to create a problem. Ford crafted a steel plate to deflect the tank down and away from the axle in a violent rear-end collision....which simply caused the tank to burst upon impact with the roadway. Ultimately, until folks stop ramming each other there will always be some type of danger, and some lawyer who will look for a way to make a buck on the liability.

Sorry. I hadn't heard about WJ's getting hitches until this thread. We have begun inspecting some but aren't able to repair any until the middle of September. We don't even have labor times for the job yet either. It all goes back to a lawsuit from someone who's family was hit and killed in what the accident description sounds like an unsurvivable accident. If I remember the article right a trailer hitch would not have changed anything. Chrysler is just giving in to the NHTSA so they don't get a PR nightmare. That hasn't stopped the NHTSA from hounding Chrysler nonstop about how slow they seem to be doing the recalls and parts availability. Which brings us to $100 gift cards to get people to come in.

Ridiculous. It is like the GM ignition switch. Some lady was killed when her Cobalt was literally crushed when a semi rear ended it as it was stuck in traffic on the highway. The car was pinned between it and the semi that has stopped in front of her. The family is of course blaming the ignition switch. Vultures

I disagree. The Pinto came out in 1968. The WJ came out thirty years later, LONG after the problems with the Pinto fuel tanks (and, incidentally, the problems with Crown Vic gas tanks) were known throughout the industry. But Jeep didn't want to have a spare time standing up in the cargo area like the Cherokee, and they didn't want the spare slung underneath like the Comanche -- so they stuck it under the cargo floor. That obviously meant they had to mount the gas tank pretty low, where it's particularly susceptible to damage.

 

My WJ didn't last a year, but in the nine or so months I had it I was a bit safer because I had the Up Country (off-road) package, so my plastic gas tank had a steel skid protecting it.

So I guess the hot tip for WJ owners without hitches is to go on Craigs List, find a cheap universal hitch, slap it on and call for your $100 gift card and free factory hitch "replacement."

I made an appointment at the local dealer for sept 22 and asked the service manager to explain the letter I got in the mail a bit better .

 

If you have a factory hitch they check to make sure that there is no structural issues with either the frame or the hitch , if all is good they leave it alone and you get $100 prepaid card .

 

If you have an aftermarket hitch they check the frame , if all is good with the frame they replace the hitch and you get the prepaid card .

 

If there is no hitch , they check the frame and install a hitch and you get the prepaid card .

 

This is what my local dealer is doing , other dealers may interpret the letter differently ..
