ComancheLover90 Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Alright, I rebuilt an engine for my comanche, and i have driven it across a few states, when i was putting the engine together i noticed the oil pan was sorta warped, but being crunched for time i put it on and RTV'd the crap outta it. and it started to leak a while ago, and just a few weeks ago i replaced the gasket and it still is leaking. I looked in the viewing port of the transmission, and there is no oil on the flexplate/torque converter/bell housing. so i doubt it is the rear main seal. My question is if the oil pan is sorta warped, could that be a cause of its leaking? and if that is the case, where can i buy a new pan? i have a 90 comanche 4.0L straight 6. and hoping to not spend an arm and a leg for a pan. if you could give me any good sites for an oil pan that would be great, thanks in advance..
sinkrun Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Ebay or amazon or a good used one. Did you put that thin metal collar back on the outside of the pan? I have a few used ones but there from up north here the have a little rust nothing serious though.
ComancheLover90 Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 I do not recall a thin metal collar. do you have any pictures of it?
Minuit Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 No pics, but there's a half-circle shaped sheet metal piece that goes around the curved part of the rear oil pan. If it's left out there will be a significant leak at the rear of the engine.
ComancheLover90 Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 that could be my problem, any good place i can buy one?
MJam86 Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 that could be my problem, any good place i can buy one?If you ever come down near Tracy i have an extra 4.0 pan sotting on my shelf. You can have it! Its obviously used but if you're in the area free is always good.

HOrnbrod Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Here, http://www.ebay.com/itm/191610664274?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT According to the parts manual, this only fits the 99 - 04 4.0 engines. The 99-04 oil pans have a different p/n's than the older pans also. Has anyone tried p/n 53010511AA to see if this reinforcement collar actually fits the older pans? The older p/n is J3243116 and looks like the below. Mine is MIA too.
sinkrun Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 I just bought one I can try to let you know when I get it as I have a couple renix engines laying in the garage. The reason I bought it is for the 2000 block I am building.

HOrnbrod Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Went over to my local dealer and he had two of the 53010511AA oil pan support pieces, so I got them both. The difference according to the parts guy is that the old p/n J3243116 is a simple metal support strip, and the newer one is that same metal strip but encapsulated in a rubber seal. He claims it seals much better than the older one. I don't know about that, but it installed easily and we'll see if it does any good as I was getting a little weeping in that area. It goes on much easier using two 5/16" Allen head bolts rather than the wider hex head stock bolts. I don't need the second piece, and if anyone wants it I'll ship it for $10 if you're located in the lower 48. New stainless Allen head mounting bolts included. Paypal preferred. chopper35nj Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I have replaced the oil pans on every XJ that I have owned and my Comanche as well they do rust out. I get them from the dealer and the last one I got was $80, the rear pan support is critical but you now know that, but what I really wanted to say is that you should NEVER "RTV'd the crap outta" anything that could let that stuff into the engine, use as little as you can get away with. Silicone is made from silica ie. sand. I know it feels smooth but RTV is downright abrasive AND could get loose and plug important oil passages and galleries.
