4 Cylinder Turbo Build!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so I'm going to be doing a swap and figured i'd post my build for anybody who wants to follow along. A little background: I bought an '86 Jeep comanche 4x4 5 speed with the 2.8 v6. Yes, the v6 was terrible, lol. She's about 95% rust free. I did a burnout a few weeks ago and I thought I blew up the transmission, turns out the diff just blew up. So naturally I bought a new engine for my truck. (When I thought it was the transmission.) I figured if I'm gonna pull the engine and tranny again I'm swapping in something better.

I purchased an SR20DET. It is a 4 cylinder turbo charged Nissan motor out of a Nissan S14. Basically its a 240SX. My buddy and I originally built it for his Nissan D21 Hardbody but, he wanted a running project so I bought for the GBD. (Good buddy discount.) Here are some photos of the engine and turbo!

Ignore my face.

The engine just needs a valve cover gasket, new cam lobe bolts, and it needs timed. She should be ready for mounts after that. I plan on taking the truck from 4x4 to 2wd and turning it into a track/auto cross truck. Yeah it's a bit sacrilegious, I know but, I want something different. Everybody lifts there jeep and has a 4.0, 4bt, om617, or some variant of a v8 in it. I was originally gonna throw a 5.0 in it but came across a killer deal on this engine.

Alas, I have begun tearing the truck apart, which took longer than i'd like to admit. This is my first engine swap, really any major mechanical work at all. I've done standard maintenance and a clutch in the past but thats about it. So this will likely be a roller coaster. I'll keep you guys updated!

Anybody who is looking to work on their jeep, at least the 2.8, you will need a set of metric tools. I don't think I used any standard accept to get the air filter cover off. The transmission drain bolt was a 24mm and you will need an 18mm. Chances are your set doesn't have those. I haven't seen many sets at all with an 18mm. Other than that it's just your typical 10-15mm nuts and bolts. If y'all have questions feel free to ask!

I am dubbing her SRMJ.

I approve of this. Will you be using a S14 tranny, or will you be using a Z32 unit?

Thanks man! I already have a 5 speed tranny I purchased with it. It;s about 90% complete. All I need is a lower harness, front mount, external wastegate, a bov, and a few other things I can't remember off the top of my head. lol. Custom mounts and driveshaft too lol.

Yes they are, I installed one in my MJ. 1996 explorer 8.8 with factory disk brakes and 4.10 gears for $200 pulled and loaded in my vehicle. The only thing that could have made it better would been to find one with limited slip

the only thing that is close to stock is a for 8.8 out of a explorer. I don know of anything else besides the stock dana 35 or 44.

What about 8.25 same width very underrated some would argue that it's as strong or stronger than 44

yes but they are hard to find. you need to look up the code for the one with the gears you want and LSD. the code will be listed on the axle tag bolted to the diff cover. This is what I did. You should be able to do a Google search and easily come up with the code. You will also want a 96 or 95 and up I think. They came with a higher spline axle and disk brakes. I found a couple with 4.10s and disk brakes in the same junk yard but never found one with LSD and 4.10s. Just the luck of the draw.

you will also have to relocated the spring perches. I went Spring over axle at the same time giving me over 4" of lift. I'm guessing you are going to want to stay Spring under axle though.  Here Is mine when I got it and and after I installed it.

This project rocks! I admire your vision and eventual completion. :) I'm a muscle car fan, but Nissan is my favorite import, and I always thought the 240 car was a sharp vehicle.

Thanks man! I appreciate that. I'm pretty stoked. I'm hoping it will be done by mid summer.
