Jeep Driver
I replaced the front axle ujoints with Federals when I did my swap, 3 years ago. They did not last 1.5 years. Now the replacements are going out AGAIN!!!!! '94 XJ D30. What CV shafts can I get to replace the ujoints. If you guys don't' recommend the CVs.......what is a good ujoint? I'm assuming Spicer is my best bet...true? Thanks
mikejenn2
iv always had good luck with Spicer. there are other things to take in account about bad u joints, tire size comes to mind right off hand over sized tires cause excessive ware. Mattwheels
RCV are good, but not cheap.. Have you tried putting in the larger U joints found in the ABS models?
Strokermjcomanche
Spicer x 2 . I've always had great luck with them and it's what the factory uses .

mvusse
After swapping to the larger u joints I tried Duralast Gold, Neapco Brute Force, Spicer and Alloy USA chromoly ones. Spicer and Alloy USA are by far the best out of those. I found the Alloy USA ones are not worth the cost of two Spicer ones, as the Spicer ones seem to last just as long. My daughter's XJ runs ZJ CV shafts with 32" tires and has never had a problem with them either. RCVs are mondo expensive, so are CTM Ujoints. For the cost of one CTM joint I bought my Dana 60. For the cost of a second one I converted it to 4 link an mounted it under the front of my truck.

shelbyluvv
My WJ had CV shafts and I broke both sides twice on 32s. Go with the spicer joints and be done with it. CVs are weak and not worth the effort to swap them.
Incommando
People with CV's who want to 'wheel often convert to U-joints.
Blue88Comanche
i have ZJ CV shafts on my MJ, I rarely wheel so its mostly for the full time 4wd use. the ones i had had the ABS ring on it but i used a puller to remove it.

I think they were mostly used on the V8 models and they all have an ABS tone ring. The ABS tone ring will interfere with some year MJ/XJ unit bearings, but if they do it only takes a few whacks with a hammer to knock them off. I use them on the XJ because it runs a 242 transfer case with full-time 4wd and they are smoother than a u joint axle. Sarah takes it offroad a few times a year (and I have as well when the MJ has been down) and no problems so far. If you have a disconnect axle you will need to do a single shaft conversion on the passenger side to use them. A friend of mine wheels a YJ with a lunchbox locker in the front axle on 33s and he runs a CV shaft on the driver side with no problem yet after about a year. Jeep Driver
I swapped them out with the same as OReily warrantied them.......no cost. I'll upgrade my axles to the larger joints next time around. Had both swapped in 1.5 hours.....I'm an old pro now :P
