TheDude
This summer I bought a Ford 8.8 with 4.10 gears and limited slip (that I verified) which came with a LP D30 that was suppose to have 4.10s in it too. Well soon after that I was moving to a new place with much less storage so I installed them both in a hurry with out installing the front driveshaft. Today I decided to change the gear oil and double check the gearing before I put the shaft in just to be safe and sure enough, if I'm reading it right the gearing is 4.88.. So now I have to decide if I want to regear the axle that's in it, or swap another one in.

TheDude
Well I'm not wheeling it so I don't care if it's LP or HP And either way I can sell the gears or the whole axle, which should net some decent money. But I just need one to put in it's place first.. Strokermjcomanche
You're better off just getting a good front axle and installing it . It'll be cheaper than buying gears and installing them . Then sell the other axle as you said .
TheDude
But It was a pain in the butt to swap that one in in the first place..
HOrnbrod
#14283 is the Spicer ring gear p/n for the 4.09 ratio "thick" gear set. Mark, rotate and count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears and divide. I think you have a 4.09 thick gear set.
Strokermjcomanche
Why ? It took me an hour and a half to swap mine out . The bolts should be easy to come out being you just changed it .
TheDude
#14283 is the ring gear p/n for the 4.09 ratio "thick" gear set. Count the ring and pinion # of teeth on each and divide. I think you have a 4.09 thick gear set. Really? I was going by the d30-488tj assuming that the "488" was the gearing. Isn't there a way to check gearing by just rotating one of the wheels? I know how to for rear axles, just not sure for fronts.

dscowell
If you have friend drive forward slowly for one whole tire rotation and you count the number of times the driveshaft rotates it'll give you a rough estimate of the gears. I'd still count the teeth that will give you the exact gearing. Counting the driveshaft rotations is more for if you aren't sure what the gears are but you know both axles are the same gears and you are being lazy.
