93' XJ, 5 spd, 4x4

Recommended Posts

Got another auction Jeep.  Its a 93' Sport, AX15, 231.  200K on it, runs good and just needs a front clip.  Here's a few shots and some JY acquisitions for it.

I bid on it sight unseen just for the 5 speed and the interior.  But it was just a little too nice to part out, so I figure I'll either fix it and drive it (I've been missing an XJ for some time now) or sell it.  I recently got married and have some kids that need braces.  So I'm selling off some of my junk, which ones I haven't figured out yet.

This 95' at LKQ has the Up Country package and leather so it'll get those pieces, seats, skid plate package and tow hooks.  Maybe the "Country" door panels if I go back to get em.  The fenders and grille are perfect, they'll be mine tomorrow.

At another yard I picked a 3-4" Pro Comp lift off a 90' XJ.  The front shocks were toast so I left em...plus I've got plenty in the garage anyway.

Also picked two rare items!  An unbroken fan shroud and an underhood light that still retracts as it should!  The 2150 is for my Willys build...

More pics to come!

Jeep on! . :MJ 1: .

I actually ran outta time to get the seats so I went back and got everything, still had the other junk in the ZJ so it was interesting fitting everything but I got everything in except for the carpet which I tied up top.

Bunch of stuff huh?  The carpet is for my little blue MJ.

I loaned my trailer to a dance studio to use as a float in the city christmas parade, just got it back today after the JY run.  So I hauled the carpet down to the car wash, soaked it with engine cleaner, it came out okay.  I could have picked a cleaner donor but hey it was only $7.

The frame rails took more of a hit than I thought.  Not a show stopper but I've got a little work ahead of me that I wasn't counting on.

Hooked the bumper to my 5.9L powered frame straightener and had my new wifey get in and hold the brakes.  :rotfl2:

Bumper is off.  :brows:

Few days old pic of Jessie, she's a cutie.  Her mother was a registered Bassett with obviously loose morals, cause no one is sure who dad was.  16007900305_2c85ef1227_z.jpg

Got the lift on.  Its a little low in the front I think.  The front coils seam a bit worn out.  We'll see how it looks after I get the front end put back together.  But I really like the rear springs so far.  They're Pro Comps #53111 with overload leafs.

I think it'll ride nice though...seeing how its got shocks that are more expensive than the Jeep   But I only paid something like $26 for em... .

I'm on the hunt for some cheap 31"s or 32"s.

Needs brakes!  I've got some new Chevy front hoses and I'll use a 78' F250 rear hose, its stupid long.

I did the ole' BPE elim with the rear sway brackets but I don't like how it rotates the upper bushing 90 degrees.  It causes a little bit of binding when the shock tries to pivot, so I cut some small wedges out of the brackets to match the curvature of the underside then welded them up to the bottom of the Jeep.  If I was using cheaper shocks I probably wouldn't have cared.

Been hunting some proper bump stops. Here's some from (L-R) Xterra, newer Rodeo, Nissan truck (hard as a rock), older Rodeo and what's left of a stock XJ bump stop.

The Rodeo bump stops are about the right size for a stock or mild MJ/XJ and they'll bolt in too. But I think I'm gonna use the taller Xterra stops and just weld em on.

Bolt holes match up...

My laptop is down again, I'll try to square away these pics when I get it up again.

Been raining and haven't touched it in a few days.  But here's a few more pics.   I also picked up a used set of 32/11.50/15 BFGs - old kind.

The Rodeo bumps, they'd bolt right on.

15898855989_f69af6a849_z.jpg

I could just buy new bumps but that would be cheating... :thwak: I'm thinking about welding on some extra spring perches as a contact point for the bumps on the axle.

15462511674_c06cac7830_z.jpg

The one on the left is a rear FourRunner bump, I think it would work up front but I couldn't get the other off.   The others are off of Jimmy's/Bravadas.  They'd work too but the large cup they snap into wouldbe so big in the coil it would make removing and installing the coils a hassle.

Cut the pinch seam and hammered it home, I think I ought to weld up the cuts though.

I was also wandering the yard and found this Discovery.  I was hoping to find a compressor but this one didn't have the air suspension... :dunno:  I don't know much about Rovers...but it did have a nice Italian made bottle jack that the counter girl let me have for free!   Another little easter egg for the XJ.

15437973694_44560d19f0_z.jpg

I actually don't like the way the front is turning out.  These JY bilsteins are a little too much shock for this amount of lift.  I'll only have about three inches of up travel before they bottom out.  So I have a lot of bumpstop in the coils.  Down travel should be pretty good though.  I think I might try some longer springs...not sure yet.

Haven't cut this side's pinch seam yet...

Need to get off my tail and finish it, had a little holiday delay and I've been a little under the weather lately.

Some JY scores, another 4.10 29 spline 8.25, Trac loc from a Dakota, D30 3.73 carrier, some cheap amazon LED lights, the obligatory cupholder, and some 280z vents I pulled a while back.  Not sure if I'll use the vents, I might cut the front off the right one so they're identical.

%50 off weekend so pulled another 4.10 8.25" w/ ebrake handle, a ZJ box and a compressor from a 92' Brougham.

Just a carrier swap, backlash is at .006, I think the pattern is good.  Its a challenge keeping everything clean working outdoors, but I've got a little parts washer and lots of brake cleaner.  This Trac loc is nice and tight, came out of a 98' Dak.

Sorry for the delay on this XJ build....I've got the TJ 2.5 at the machine shop getting bored out.  In the meantime I helped a buddy on his 93' XJ.  We changed the head gasket and swapped a 99+ intake.  Turned out he had a Renix block with a 7120 head.

We had to go back to the JY for a PS bracket and I scored a K&N CAI for $10!  Also found a 2.5L Dakota which will soon donate its bellhousing and trans to Jay's Junk pile o' Jeep parts for some future project.

Sorry for the delay, this was supposed to be a fun, fast, cheap XJ build but I'm almost done with the 2.5, then back to the XJ!

My buddy broke a couple of vertebrae in a work accident last year and luckily wasn't paralyzed.  He's an inch shorter now and still not fully recovered.  He inherited it with a bad head/head gasket and leaked coolant into the cylinders while he was out of action and rusted the cylinders.  Its tough to keep an engine clean during assembly working in the driveway but we had plenty of brake cleaner on hand.  I was glad to help out, It was a fun rebuild.  I should have it stabbed and running tomorrow.  Its timed, primed and ready to go.  .030 pistons, new cylinder head, new stock cam, pacesetter header, 4 hole injectors, 4.0 TB, 225 amp alternator (for a big system)...a couple of pics.

Tried this blue color out, we decided it was too much like Ford Blue.  So he chose black and burnt orange.

Priming the engine.  Seems pressure will be good, good flow up the pushrods.

Fancy alternator.
