sloride
I use a c-clamp, socket and a vice. Sometimes a little PB Blaster and heat is needed but not always.
ftpiercecracker1
A bench vice and a socket or even better a bearing press.
Eagle
They do have to be pressed out. Everyone I know uses a vise and a socket.
johnnyc
I use a ball joint press, basically a big c-clamp.
Lee21490
I've always just set them off the side of a bench, put a socket/etc on the cap & hit it with a hammer untill it falls out. I don't own a press. You can change a u-joint in just a few minutes with just a hammer.
Rockfrog
And just so you know ... A 1310 series ujoint doesn't know if it's 2wd or 4wd. My 2wd 88 MJ uses the same ujoint as my 00 4wd XJ (just that the 2wd uses far less of them). I used a ballpoint press myself, make quick work at home or on the trail. redwolf624
ok, so what if i don't have a vice or a ball point press or the money for any of it, i do have a C clamp. Redwolf

Redwolf AutoZone or Advanced Auto will generally "rent" you tools like a ball joint press for nothing. You give them a security deposit, take the tool home and use it, and you get your money back when you return the tool.

mikejenn2
take the shaft , put it on a block or something strong bench should work just as long as it will hang off the edge. take a 17 mm or so socket and pound on the one side of the ujoint making sure that u pull any "C" clips or snap ring out b4 hand pound till the other side comes out then flip it over and do the same if necessary. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jpME2VD1oA

Lee21490
that hammer method looks a lot easier lol but i'll deffently give that a try, thanks, Redwolf It's actually pretty simple, Just make sure you are tapping the new cap on straight, and the bearings don't pop out. nitroxsteve
Or pull the drive shaft and take it to someone who can show you how to do it the first time.

yxmj
Befre this goes to far.....watch this YES IT IS NOT AN MJ......the procedure is the same now watch it again
Rockfrog
Add some extra grease into the caps to hold the bearings in place, helps make sure they stay there. Nothing sucks worse than the sound of a needle bearing snapping when yer almost done. OK, we'll maybe a split dual cardin pivot yoke snapping while removing the old joint sucks more ... So remember to remove the retainer clips, now go check again!
