What's The" White Whale" Of Comanches?

What Comanche would be a rare factory find? I saw a post of a diesel powered manche,as well as a few Eliminator rarities. I'm not talking about mods but something from the factory with super low production numbers. It might not be worth much, but just a rare find in the Comanche world.

I really don't see the hype about the Thunderchief, I think it's extremely ugly. That could be the overbearing red though since I hate red. I mean all it's missing is matching wheels. *shudder*

The other guys hit it on the head basically. Diesel, Street, First/Last, and the LWB Eliminators. Maybe the Archer trucks? "To each their own" is something I think applies well in this subject when there are a handful of "rarities".

Robs MJ has power windows, locks, cruise, is diesel, 4.10 gears. Only thing that would add rarity is amc20 rear end. Finding any MJ of that vintage with power windows and. Locks is hard.

Could have been an aftermarket addition on the windows and locks.  But, cruise on the diesel?  Rare indeed.

Don't remember if Rob's diesel came with the factory window sticker or not.  But imagine Rob has a factory build sheet.

You'll have stripes on the sides with "ELIMINATOR" in big letters. From your profile pic, your truck appears to be a Sport - a 92 only package. Eliminators also had a ton of options - 4.0, full gauges, bucket seats, etc.

Anyone can put decals on and call it what they want. BUT, the 8th character of the VIN number designates the original factory Gross Vehicle Weight / Trim Level package. For instance the below is for the 87-90 MJs as follows:

F    Comanche Base / Metric Ton 5001-6000 Lb.

P    Comanche Pioneer / 4001-5000 Lb.

R    Comanche Pioneer / Metric Ton 5001-6000 Lb.

S    Comanche Chief / 4001-5000 Lb.

T    Comanche Laredo / 4001-5000 Lb.

U    Comanche Laredo / Metric Ton 5001-6000 Lb.

1    Comanche Base / 4001-5000 Lb.

5    Comanche Eliminator / 4001-5000 Lb.

Okay, so my jeep is a "Chief" Sport model.  All I know is I have not ever seen the trim on my jeep on any other. There are three other Comanches here in town (population of less than 5,000), and they are Eliminator models. I get offers on mine....a lot. Wouldn't sell it for anything.

Nope, no Chief MJs in 1992. The VIN codes changed in 1991 (AMC to Chrysler), the 6th VIN digit indicates the trim series:

6th digit - series

1 Sport (S)

2 SE (base)

3 Pioneer & Islander

4 Sahara

5 Renegade, Grand & Laredo

6 Sport, Renegade & Eliminator

7 Limited & Country 8 Sport

Looking at your tiny avatar, your truck looks like a base model with a dealer installed "swoosh" decal. I have what looks like the same decal on my 91, and the original owner (I'm the second) verified it was a dealership option when he bought it. Would help if you posted up a larger pic.

No RHD MJs were made AFAIK.@jeepcomj there are 91/92 sportrucks out there but the "swoosh" Sport seems to have replaced it by 92. The difference is pretty much just cosmetic.

The swoosh was just a dealer installed decal. The sportruck did still exist, but it looked like this:

I myself have always been after the white whale of Comanches.

At a point in time I had the last known Comanche made, as well as being the only known factory hunter green Eliminator. What really got to me was the fact that even though it was all of these things, it was still just a 4.0L AW4 231 with D30/35. Nothing special. No power windows, no power locks... Just an 'every truck' in different clothes. It didn't help that on my way home with it (not kidding) someone just happened to surface with one that had a later build date on the same thread.

When I had the opportunity to purchase a factory diesel, that was my 'white whale'. The vehicle that at an instant, you knew was something different. You don't have to explain that the color was only available at end year, or that it is one of the last made... People walk by, see the engine, and stop in their tracks. -at least the ones that know enough to care.

When the opportunity presented itself to pick it up, I jumped on it. Lots of people can say they have a Pioneer, few less for Elimintator, fewer can say Chief, fewer yet an X or XLS... But to say you have an X, with a factory, turbocharged, intercooled, oil cooled, overhead cam, Renault diesel, that's a five speed, four wheel drive, A/C, power windows, power locks, cruise control, and get 30 MPG?

I'm the only one I know of.

As Pat said, I probably have the rarest factory attainable MJ, at least in my eyes. The only thing that would make it better is if they had checked the box for the Metric Ton package and strapped up an AMC 20. That would have been the cherry on it.

Sure, there are the Archer trucks, the thunderchief, the street MJ's are out there, but I just don't hold them to that same standard. The Thunderchief is complete unobtainium, the archers trucks were customized after market, and so were the street Comanches.

Not to say I would turn any of them down given an opportunity...

Then there is other stuff, like LWB roll bars, the bar that adds 2 more lights to a factory bar, the bed mats, hidden winches, grille guards, window louvers, factory plows... But all of that is more or less bolt on and changable... Not exactly tied to a truck. While they contribute to the rarity of a truck, they don't make it so.

My '87 will have the LWB roll bar, the hidden winch, and any other small options I can get my clammy hands onto, but I don't think that will make any more rare, just more of a conversation piece. The stories behind how I got those are more interesting than the parts themselves.
