shelbyluvv
I very rarely climb on my soap box. I'm going to so if you don't want to read my sermon please vacate the area now. I bought a new set of Cooper Discoverer ATPs for Buffy (my 07 CTD) from Discount Tire Direct. They are a great tire and are ridiculously affordable. A set of LT285/70R17 will run just under $700 shipped! Find a E range tire with a 55k warranty for close to that. You'll be hard pressed to. This rant is not about DTD. They had the tires to me in 3 days! Now that I procured my new meats I took the truck in to have them mounted and balanced. I specifically asked them to check the front end over to make sure it was tight BEFORE mounting the tires. I was told it was perfect. The reason I wanted it looked at is because I had a shimmy at 55 mph on the highway. They mounted and balanced the tires and sent me on my way. I got her up to speed and the shimmy was still present. I chalked it up to an alignment. I decided to take her to the hobby shop on base for a once over before I pay to have the alignment done. Here is where my rant starts. There is no way in hell they checked the truck over before mounting my tires. Upon my inspection I found the following worn parts, All ball joints both hubs all tie rod ends loose steering gear and soft track bar bushings. You have got to be kidding me! If I knew these parts were worn I would have never mounted my new tires. I located all new Moog joints and rod ends along with Timken hubs on Rockauto for $560 shipped. Good deal but it still irritates me that people can be so worthless in a tire shop. An actual tire shop! I will never trust my truck to another shop, ever. From this point on I will do all my own work. No matter how crappy the job is. Rant off
Minuit
I think a lot of us here have the same complaints. A shop will always try to get as much money out of you as possible for as little time/effort expended and they love to prey on people who either don't know better or don't care. My MJ will never see a shop if there is even a remote possibility that I can do the work - I stopped having faith in the opinions of people who wanted my money when a number of shops told me I needed a new engine pronto at the cost of roughly $3-4000. My problem? Flexplate bolt knock. A lot of shops out there don't care at all about doing the job right and leaving a satisfied customer as long as they get the paycheck. Not to mention the money saved by not having to pay for labor.
Automan2164
Was it a tire only shop? I mean, I'd have been all over that for upsell and more money in my pocket if I was still at the dealer. Only thing I can think of is that it was a tire only kinda place that doesn't do that sort of work and just wanted the money for the tires, knowing that you would wait if additional work was required... It's super rare for any mechanic to look work in the eye and say no on the clock. Rob
jimoshel
When I was 16 I took my pride and joy, a '38 Buick 4dr convertable in for a oil change and grease job. When I got it home I crawled underneath and checked. Not one grease fitting had been touched. I haven't used a professional repair facility for anything since. AeroNautical
Discount Tires are strictly tires and rims. They don't do alignments, or ANY other work. They change, balance, mount and repair flats, that is IT. They should not have told you everything was fine by any means, they should have told you they aren't qualified to give that opinion. A good thing about DT is you can breathe down their necks the entire process, watching everything they do, and you can be sure for yourself what shape your suspension components are in while the tires are off. Never ask, check yourself if you want it done right.
shelbyluvv
It was not Discount Tire. There isn't one anywhere near here. It was a local shop that does tires, shocks, brakes, alignments and all around maintenance. I am not impressed at all with the "southern hospitality" I've seen here in Georgia this time around. I can honestly say that I will not be staying in the southeast. I will eventually find my way back to the southern California desert.
AeroNautical
Sorry, I misunderstood you. You said Discount Tire direct, I automatically assumed they put the tires on, too. It's definitely hit or miss with that southern hospitality, you've really got to be in the right area to get it. Too rich an they're snobs, too poor and they're @$$ backwards about the world. Minuit
"Southern Hospitality" doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned. You'll find good and bad people wherever you look.

Not to continue to divert from the OPs original topic, but i could not agree more with both of these statements. While it does still exist, it is extremely rare. "Southern hospitality" any more is just one wealthy family catering to another in an attempt to jocky for a better social/economic/political position. What do you guys think of you some says southern hospitality, as in what is it supposed to be. Sorry shelbyluvv
danbyrambler
When/where was the last mech inspection done? I doubt everything wore out all at once. All too common to bounce from one rip off to another anymore. "Win some, loose some" seems to have been replaced with "Gotta take the bitter with the sour" "What a revolting development this is". . . . .Chester A. shelbyluvv
I checked the truck over in July before I drove it from California to Georgia. If you know the Dodge 2500 Cummins, you know they are hell on suspension and steering parts. I know the front end was tight 7 months ago. I am the one who looked it over. There is not a lot of play in the tie rods but they do have enough movement to make me want to change them out. The wheel bearing on the other hand are bad. There is no way they checked them. You can clearly hear and feel them moving. I'll have all the parts in hand by Friday night and will have her back on the road by Saturday evening. But I agree...I can't stand lazy people. No one anymore has self motivation for anything anymore
Keyav8r
Not sure exactly when it started, but it was two pronged, maybe three pronged. Or maybe even four pronged. Not necessarily in the order listed. Our education system changed course from teaching children the history of our great country and how it is supposed to work and began teaching that it doesn't matter whether you win or lose and that it's more important that everyone feels good about themselves even if they can't pour piss out of a boot with the instructions written on the heel. Our elected officials became more concerned with how long they could stay in office, how much power they could grab, how much graft and corruption the could rake in, and just said to hell with their oath to support the Constitution and do what's right for the country. Many of our churches became more concerned with how big they could grow than with teaching and preaching the Word of God and training children and adults to differentiate between right and wrong. Many, if not most, parents abdicated their duty to teach, nurture and discipline their children, deciding it was easier just to be their child's buddy. And that is the recipe for how the once greatest nation on earth goes merrily down the path to being another third-rate banana republic with an inept, megalomanic dictator wannabe exactly in position. I'm officially off my soap box now. No guarantee I won't climb back up later.
