4 piece back glass?

Recommended Posts

i havent seen many with 4 piece back glass, was this a factory option? you can kind of see it in the pic below, it splits in the middle and the two pieces both slide to to their side, if this is something that a lot of people have? is this off a different vehical? if so what, I'm in need of the inside clip so it will lock.

thanks for any help.

Jonathan

I am relatively new to MJ's, but mine has the slider back window and I have seen more with than without. I think if you post something in the classified as a "want ad" you will have good luck in getting what you want, as there are lots of people parting out there retired MJ's.

Good luck.

I've seen a photo of one other like that, but all the trucks I've seen "up close and personal" had three-piece windows, with a single sliding center section. The ones I have seen personally, though, are all AMC vintage. The double slider may have been offered in the '91 and '92 models that were built under more Chrysler influence.

if you watch ebay you will see the 4 piece ones sometimes. they were an aftermarket addition, or when you had a broken pane in your 3 piece and took it for new windows...they would put the 4 piece in because it's cheaper than replacing 1 pane.

that happened on one of mine...but it had a crappy 4-piece put in it that's actually for an s10. that one's on the junker now and i put a 3 pane back in the one it came out of. have the reciepts explaining it somewhere too...

lostissues, can you snap a shot of your split rear from the inside...so that we can see EXACTLY what the clip looks like?

the problem with yours is that it's far less common than the 3 pane ones, so I very much doubt if anyone has one. BUT I think a suitable alternative may be had if you can send pics of the clip, the spot the part it to clip to would be, and such. I think i may have something you could use...but it would have to be glued unless there's room for a screw or 2?

let us know.

I have the 4 piece on my '88, and I know for a fact that it is the original glass, as I am the third owner of it. My mom's step sister is the original owner from back in '87 when she bought it, then I bought it in '97, but was under 18 so it was in my mom's name, I got the title in '01. The only glass that has been replaced on it was the windshield. Here's a better pic from the back of it.

With Jeep there always seems to be exceptions to the rules. For what it's worth, every single slider window visible in all of my dealership brochures are 3-piece. Both four-piece windows I have are aftermarket.

Pics: (sorry for all the stickers, the P.O liked them i guess  )

outside

inside

latch

left side of latch (sorry about my hand, camera phone likes to auto focus on the background :redX: )

right side of latch (missing piece)

i looks like it could be easy to make something that will work with it cause of the 2 screw holes, just a smaller piece of metal land screw it on, but if anyone has any idea where they can be found like if they were also used on rangers or yotas or something that would be awsome.

Three (or is it four) of the MJs I have here (all 89 or older) have sliding rear windows, and all are the single-slider, 3-pane type. I don't think a 4-piece in that vintage was ever a factory option. I suppose a truck might have come from a dealer that way, if the buyer wanted a sliding window added and the dealer had it installed locally because it came from the factory with a fixed rear.

BTW -- the clips are almost impossible to find because they come as part of the glass. I've been looking for one for my '88 since I bought it 8 years ago and I haven't found one yet.

eagle, the clips are hard to find on the 3 pane one. the 4 pane one has them screwed onto the metal frame....so really any 4 pane clip could be made to work.

we're in the same boat on the clips...well, i had 2 but somehow lost one. at least i have a good one left for my slider :D

For a 3 pane? I just popped one off another Comanche with a screwdriver and had the windshield guy epoxy it on. Looked like a Chevy clip I had would've worked too.
