Factory fender flares

Recommended Posts

On my comanche I have the black plastic flares. Over the years they have faded and are in bad shape. I was woundering if Jeep only used one shade of black on all the production years on the MJ. The reason why I am asking this is I was lucky enough to find two brand new flares for the back. the only thing are they are not painted. The fronts are easy to find. but the rear is like finding a needle in a hay stack! Does any one know the paint code for the shade of black that came from the factory?

Thanks

They are black plastic and the black flares were unpainted. If you want to restore faded ones, go to an auto paint store (or maybe one of the chain auto parts stores) and get a rattle can of spray-on bumper black.

Just curious Detailer, where/how did you luck out and find new rear flares? I know you can still get them from the stealer, but big $$. Also, I guess you know that you'll most likely break off every stud on the flare backing plates when you change them out. I'd start douche-ing them down daily w. PT Blaster for about a month before swapping - maybe you can save a few studs and not have to drill them all out and replace.

i got a new set from the stealership i use to work at for free.

and there is a much better way to put flares back on then with factory bolts and stuff. i will get some pics of how i always put em back on in my 91 eliminator 4x4 project topic tomorrow. you don't even need the stupid plastic strip in the back or the metal strip that is always just one big rust part.

Geeat Alex - would love to see some pics since I'm planning of replacing my rears soon. BTW, still have any good contacts with the stealership?? :brows:

actually yes. they won't give me stuff free anymore, but they still give me the worker discount since we have bought a new PT and a used Silverado off them plus soon i will be buying a 4dr wrangler rubi or gladiator. so they give me the discount still.

When we put the front ones on we just used some SS bolts with 2 large fender warshers on each side and it worked great.

sounds like what i did on all of my flares, i also used SS nylon lock nuts. I have some pics i will post that show just how well it looks and works. plus i might still have some around and i might be able to post sizes that seemed to fit perfectly.

Also used the SS nylon lock nuts. Trip to Lowes and it was done

this is to us Ohioans who deal with rust so bad that a new car rusts in 5 years. so we think SS first when we can. lol.

i have so much SS stuff on my 91 that if the body rusts, there will be SS bolts, washers, and nuts fallin off everywhere.

I work at a local dealership and have a budy at another. I gave him the part numbers I needed. He tracked down the two rears down over in Montana. They were sitting on a shelf collecting dust. I got the two for $100 dollars. That price includes my employee discount. Also what do you mean by PT blast?

i think he meant PB Blaster. it is a really good rust breaker for stuff like this. the more it soaks the better it does.

I heard that the rear flares from a 2 door XJ are the same as the ones for an MJ

When I first joined the forum, there was a debate over this, so I pulled a 2dr, 4dr, and MJ flare at the junkyard. Like Pete said, it's a no-go here.
