Bornindesert
Found a complete 2000 xj 8.25 Axle, it's an open carrier, 29 spline axles, 3.55 ratio. It's been dropped out of a stock xj, comes with the brakes, drums, eBrake cables. This will be a spare for my current D35 in the MJ, or I'll build it with a locker and just swap it in. Does $150 sound reasonable for this used Axle?

Comanche County
That's around JY price. But its very common, maybe offer $75 to start off and go up from there.
Bornindesert
Thanks - and by common you mean it's a very common axle, lots of them out there so negotiate accordingly yup yup?
Bornindesert
And I also found a D44 out of a Comanche, 3.54 ratio and the guy is firm at $400. Any inputs on what others have picked up a used D44 for?
87Warrior
I picked up my MJ D44 for $300 with matching driveshaft. I sold a complete 99 XJ 8.25 for $100. I was asking $150 and would have taken $
Bornindesert
87Warrior appreciate the reference points on both axles!
SW86
i paid 100. thats pretty much going rate around here. 75 could be done though
Bornindesert
Update: Picking up an MJ rear D44 tonight afterwork...guy mentioned in this thread came down to $320. Taps me out for this week, but the money and time saved to convert the $150 Chrysler 8.25 over to the MJ is probably worth it. Getting an extra driveshaft thrown in would have been nice! Still think the 8.25 is a good option tho, like the 3" axle tubes and the rear just looks beefy...comparted to the D35. appreciate the inputs! Geonovast
The 29 spline 8.25 is a pretty beefy axle. You'll do fine with it, given an immediate choice between the 2, I'd only jump on the D44 if it was a hell of a deal. I also like the beefy look of the 8.25. Even the 27 spline can be a great deal if you plan on having the carrier out at some point, because the 27 spline and 29 spline versions are the same housing. I've purchased two 29 spline 3.55 8.25s. One was $150 from Pete, the other was $25 off of CL because it had a broken shock stud. Oh no.
HOrnbrod
Got my MJ D44 for $225. It also came with an extra Trac-Lok differential.
jimoshel
Got a Dana 44 from a '87 MJ at the local P&P. $125. they don't care, or know the difference between a D44, D35, Ford or GM. To them a rear axles a rear axle and that's their going rate. When selling I ask $150 for a Rear end and if they offer anything over a $100, I take it. Dana 44 excepted. Bornindesert
Well, $300 was the deal I got for the D44 that's straight up 91 Comanche. Guess the only bonus was its a TruTrack carrier (thought it was open), and it's been freshened up with bearings, seals, brakes and drums. The WJ was nice enough to bring home the MJ's new rear end, hope she likes it!
87manche1
Around here a d44 goes for around 500 unless u can get it at pull a part 200. Good find
HOrnbrod
Your MJ will love it. It looks a lot better than the one I dragged home. Image Not Found
SW86
I'm sure his looked like that before the PO went over it. id say you got a good deal. nothing to brag about but good for sure. wish i had a 44 ;)
ComancheKid45
Yep i think ya made out good on that 1! Heck i paid $1500 for the D44 i put in my Blue truck......of course it came with a truck of its own :D
Exgrayxj
Bolt in, freshened up, trutrack, $300 is a deal. I can't even fine a 44 around here, I am looking at a Dodge 150 8.25, and modifying it to work. (saddles, etc). Looks to be 1 1/2" wider per side. Guy is asking $220, it's a suregrip, out of a '78 so it has the right bolt pattern. I can't even seem to find a xj 8.25 with a suregrip for my xj ... Bornindesert
Thanks all for the guidance. The inputs on the 8.25 gave me just enough pause to scout out the D44. Just got lucky on timing as I was in the same boat, couldn't locate one either which was why I was leaning toward the 8.25. Got a chance to open it up today. No issues, nice wear pattern and brakes/rotors are fresh. Pinion pointing down in pic. One weird thing tho, there's a rubber stopper located in the cover which looked factory, a drain so you don't need to remove the cover. But from the inside, after a took the cover off, looks like a .45 cal round made the hole! Anyway, was curious if anyone's seen a drain hole in their d44. I'll have to post up a pic. Maybe this Comanche was in gun fight lol
HOrnbrod
Some junkyards punch a hole in the cover to drain the oil. But usually not a bullet hole. The Rubicon D44s have a drain plug in the housing, but not ours unfortunately. Image Not Found
Bornindesert
From the looks of it, punched and plugged with a stopper. Makes sense, JY's must have developed many tricks over the years to combat EPA violations. I'd say that's the answer.
xjrev10
100 bucks for 29 spline 8.25 150 for XJ/MJ 44 Those are good prices IMO. Thats what I would pay. I don't think XJ/MJ D44s where all that rare to begin with....
mvusse
XJ ones aren't as rare as MJ ones, but an XJ one will need the same modifications as any other axle to fit under an MJ. And MJ specific one will not need to be modified, saving time and money.

Some junk yards don't know Jack. I once called one and asked how much they wanted for a Dana 30 out of a Jeep Cherokee. They quoted me $600. When I asked why so high, their reply was "because you asked for the Dana axle. The base 4wd front axle you can have for $300."
