ftpiercecracker1
ya, I don't know what is going on there, but back to your question. Any comanche or cherokee 4.0 radiator should work fine as far as fitment, BUT I am not sure about your coolant temp sensor. I do not know what year it was that it was moved to the t-stat housing from the radiator, but I do know the renix sensor is not compatible. dasbulliwagen
In order to fit the 4.0 radiator, youll need to change the whole front core support (radiator and headlight mounting sheetmetal). This will take some cutting and welding from a donor. You may also need to change the hood, or redo the hood latches to your old hood in order to get the hood to stay shut as the hood latches were also changed in 87 with the different core support. k3y3l3e3
So it looks like ill be looking for another radiator that will cool just as well but won't require me to change as much of the truck out.
maddzz1
He not refused while a autopsy cialis and urged. Thats some good cialis. Didn't even refuse while they autopsied him. :chillin:
dasbulliwagen
If you insist on not changing the core support, you might try looking at a WJ Grand Cherokee rad. I modded the electric fan from one to fit my 2.5 rad.... Same rad a s 2.8. So a WJ one might go in with some custom mounts. Might be a good place to start. onlyinajeep726
The problem I see with using another radiator of similar shape/size to cool a 4.0L is that it will sit too far back to squeeze in the 4.0L, especially if you retain the clutch fan. When they redesigned, they moved the radiator forward by 5-6 inches, but had to go with a different shape radiator as to not rid the Jeep of structural integrity on the front tie-in support. Basically, the way I see it, you'll have to move the radiator forward, which will require cutting and welding, so why not just go ahead and update it to the '87+ design? I will run into this same problem when I redo my '86...
k3y3l3e3
Well what i see is the brackets for the 2.5 radiator stick into the engine bay about 5-6 inches. And the last few days I've been looking up radiator sizes and an 83 ish ranger with a v6 its slightly bigger than the 2.5 rad bus its a 3 row. I'm gunna run an electric fan as well. onlyinajeep726
You're still likely to run into the issue of the 4.0 being longer. However, take handful of measurements and see what you find out. I'm sure it can be done and if you go through with it, post lots of pictures to help the rest of us out lol.
k3y3l3e3
That I will do! Maybe even an all aluminum radiator would be a good idea? Either way the amount of time/money into building my 4.0 it'll stay cool!
onlyinajeep726
I know this thread is a few months old, but have you gotten any further with this? If so, I'd like to see some pictures as is may aid me in my swap.
1989 Eliminator
If you do end up getting a newer radiator, I would strongly recommend a dual core instead of a stock single core radiator. You will never have problems overheating and is a well worth investment.
onlyinajeep726
Not sure if you are talking to me or the OP, but I plan to run a two row CSF in mine. OEM isn't worth the money...
k3y3l3e3
I decided to go with a ranger radiator from an 83 v6 its a tripple core and I'm running an electric fan. Grand cherokee upper rad hose and a custom lower. The best part is its an actual brass and copper radiator.

Eagle
So it looks like ill be looking for another radiator that will cool just as well but won't require me to change as much of the truck out. Good luck on that. If AMC Jeep could have gotten adequate cooling without redesigning and retooling the entire front end, they would have done so. Sadly, the '86s and older were never meant to have a 4.0, at least not until I came along haha. I've pretty much got the radiator support and hood latches done about 99% on my '86. Yes is see now......Have you looked into a rad from a YJ....I do not Know what your requirements are.... but on my 87 2.5 if i had not gotten the new 2000 rad, I had already looked under the hood of my yJ and that rad looked like it would be an easy replacement.....on the YJ they use the same rad for both the 2.5 and the 4L (just different shroud)

Aidenmoreno3
You guys see any reason this wouldn’t work?? Dual core too. Maybe some experimenting with yj or tj rad hoses and see what works? It says it cools 4.0 engines and should fit. I haven’t done any measurements yet so I’m hoping the area in front of the engine in the 86 is less than 23” in length https://www.mishimoto.com/jeep-wrangler-yj-tj-radiator-87-06.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzOWOn5C09AIViB-tBh162QUVEAQYASABEgIAnPD_BwE#features
