shawn
i'd like to know if anybody would like to get a list together (or knows of one) of different types of hood vents that would work well on an mj or an xj. i know of the lebaron ones, but i've heard of people using others. anything we should be on the look-out for? MJRemi
I like the vents with more shape to them, like the Nissan Z car vents. The LaBaron vents are functional but plain Jane. I've thought about taking the Street Comanche to a local Hot Rod shop and get an estimate for custom louvers into the hood itself. That would allow a lot of flexibility as long as the vents don't run into the reinforcement support framing on the underside of the hood.
Harley
always wondered how the vents from a 3rd gen IROC camaro would look. its got some potential I think anyway.....

AMCJeepMJ
Not to threadjack, but adding louvers will allow rain, snow, or water from misaligned sprinklers and roof runoff from storms into the engine compartment... would this not potentially cause damage to various components/systems under the hood, or would it not matter? MJRemi
Don, does anyone still sell the cowl hoods?
HOrnbrod
I really haven't looked lately Remi, but I know Reflexxion stopped making them about two years ago. You can find the fiberglass ones but I've heard they don't fit very well.
Sir Sam
5.9 vents look good and are fairly cheap out of the uk.
AMCJeepMJ
another option...
ComancheKid45
HA never even thought of that before, althought not very big vents, it would keep your truck true to its routes!
HOrnbrod
I had those on for awhile until I found a cowl hood. They didn't do squat for cooling, especially with the drip pans installed. Got them in the UK for cheap as Sam mentioned. A lot of the Export XJs and ZJs had these vents. Interestingly, the vents on the XJs were non-functional, purely ornamental. The ZJ vents were functional and had the drip pans.
Sir Sam
I feel like the location of the vents may change the functionality. That being said, I think none of the vents are functional and are only sold as snake oil cooling. Aesthetics value only.
willi2ds
I put on some of those autozone cheapo vents, although i am fond of the datsun vents as well.
Comanche County
I think a good tight fan clutch and a good unbroken shroud are key to cooling. If you've got AC, get a thermometer and ensure its coming on when it should. Should be at 220 degrees or when the AC is on. Then upgrade to a 10 blade Efan. if no AC, then add a 10 blade XJ fan, it'll help pull air through the rad. I think any hood vent will help with under hood air temps. Heat rises you know. But since there's higher air pressure on top of the hood when at speed, they may not let that much heat out. But they definitely work good at idling or crawling. I see heat pouring out of mine. The best hood option is probably a cowl hood. Just like the old cowl induction hoods from the 60s/70s, there's a very high pressure point at the base of the windshield and cool air is forced in. But if it's just a gap and the opening isn't sealed to the intake, then theoretically it would work at high speeds and at idle. Unfortunately cowl hoods for MJs are reserved only for the ultra rich. :)
jeepsouth
I've decided to fit a add on cowl scoop. Should look pretty cool ,and keep the engine compartment cool too.
HOrnbrod
I feel like the location of the vents may change the functionality. That being said, I think none of the vents are functional and are only sold as snake oil cooling. Aesthetics value only. Agree. I located the ZJ vents toward the rear initially since the only stroker cooling problems I had were at slow speed, hot weather, in traffic. Didn't help at all. Then tried the el-cheapo 1" shim rear hood lift at the windshield, which did help considerably. Then looked for a true cowl hood. Then upgrade to a 10 blade Efan. Agree also. Dumped the mechanical fan and upgraded to two 10-blade E-fans. Helped immensely. The best hood option is probably a cowl hood. Just like the old cowl induction hoods from the 60s/70s, there's a very high pressure point at the base of the windshield and cool air is forced in. For me, the cowl hood was the final answer. It works in all conditions, and the second e-fan may kick on on 100* plus days stuck in traffic. I picked up a used cowl hood on Ebay for $150 shipped, so not for the "ultra rich". Tool time. Hood scoops and vents need to be tailored to specific conditions. Most don't do sheite. But if you are looking for cool factor aesthetics and not worried about destroying your hood, go for it.
jeepsouth
I'm thinking there are plenty of hoods out there so i'll be trying something for the coming summer heat, something like this.Image Not Found
Sir Sam
If you really want to go cowl cooling just use some hinge spacers and turn the whole damn thing into a cowl cooler plus you might get some low speed cooling too.

jeepsouth
Thought about that Sam ,but the add on cowl is in my opinion way cooler (looking). I already have dual electric fans ,new radiator ,hoses etc. I'll be doing this for 50% looks 50% function.
