What Have You Towed With Your Comanche?

Recommended Posts

The common issue in this thread is the stopping. Properly functioning trailer brakes solve that issue quite well and should allow safe towing up to the factory rated capacity using common sense driving techniques applicable to towing. The 4.0 has plenty of grunt to pull the weight along.

89 2.5l 2wd 100k 4speed manual. few scrap runs with home made trailer, several full loads of stone and one over load of stone (close to 3/4 vary uneasy that day) all up hill in a quarry I LOL at some of those days. the nubes at the quarry with full dump tucks trying to git up hill and stalls goes back down to the bottom to start aging thay wave me to go i drop into first and up the hill i go with no trouble (even with the 3/4 ton load)and have them scratch their head asking how the hell did he do it, and moving the 4 ton trailer around in the yard (empty). i had people question how power full my lil jeep is but in the end they want one for themselves :driving: . :MJ 1: .

I have an '88 pioneer longbed manual 4x4 that I tow my 16' camping trailer.  It handles pretty good, but doesn't pull steep mountain grades on the northern California coast very fast, but does pretty good usually. It has the tow package but no upgrades. 300k miles and still going strong

Once I have mine repaired.. I may attempt a long dangerous tow to recover my dodge3500 from my folks place. 130miles with roughly 8klb behind. Only spot I'm iffy on... is the one bridge I'll have to cross. Jacksonville's buckman bridge, Southside i295 west from i95. But that still seems safer than the curves I'd have to navigate if I took i95 north to my exit. Lol

renting Uhaul vans is way cheaper than hospital bills.  :L:

Uhaul said they have nothing to tow it

the 30 ft Uhaul truck can't tow it, but your comanche can?

this seems like a very poor idea. :(

I had specifically planned to tow my 17' Crestliner Superhawk around Washington State with the Comanche.

Loaded out, boat/trailer combo crosses the scales at right around 3000 lbs - but not happy with set up as is....

Rear end squats too much with the boat hooked up - 32 year old leaf springs and probably similar vintage shocks not helping - have an air bag helper kit (still have not installed) may solve that issue, or may order new springs and shocks.

Bigger problem (for me) is the factory 3.07 gearing with the 31" tires makes for piss poor towing - so looking to swap out the axles - found a '86 4 cyl manual 4x4 for sale locally for $1500 but did not act quick enough  - that one most likely had 4.10 gears which is what I want to put on the rig.

Expect that once I get the gearing changed, the MJ will be a pretty sweet set up - for now  still using my full size Sierra to yard the boat around.

You talking about renting a box truck just to tow it?

Edit, I don't see why it would be a horrible idea with someone riding brakes in the other truck... its got possibly 8x the stopping power the comanche has lol

possibly the insane illegality of it all.  :dunno:

Literally everything they rent is a better tow vehicle than a 30 year old MJ.  :D

you will need extra cooling for such long trip under load... also get someone to brake the other truck, MJs have te pulling power but not enough stopping power, ironic

i towed a friends 2001 WJ for like 15 miles and had to stop midway to allow it to cool, i didnt know WJs were that heavy
