mvusse
My son and I are attepting to convert 88 mj 2x4 manual to 4x4 manual. Best parts vehicle we have found so far is a 91, 4 door cherekee. The only major difference so far is the wheel base on the cherekee is approx 12" shorter than the mj. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas that could make tranision as painless as possible? That will be the best donor you can find. Use everything from the Cherokee except the rear driveshaft. Have your current 2wd rear driveshaft shortened to fit with the transfer case. Park them side by side, take something off the Cherokee, put it on the Comanche. You will have to remove the seats and carpet to get to the bolt holes holding the shifter linkage bracket to the inside driver side of the tunnel. chappy88
Hey guys Just starting to convert manual mj 2x4 to 4x4 . Found a 91 manual xj as donor, any thoughts on how this may all turn out? Not sure if original rear axle is compatible? I do know the rear driveshaft will have to be altered.

Futurecomancheowner
My conversion went great, but make sure you get a decent vaccuum harness for the front disconnect axle. I snap those stupid hoses every time I mess with my transfer case, but they're easily repaired. Theres a sweet replacement cable that you pull from inside the cab made by AlloyUSA for about $160 to solve the vaccuum harness crap, if you have $160. 87MJTIM
I am guessing you mean the CAD bypass. http://comancheclub.com/topic/17377-cad-fix-1/ In the DIY section.

I'm going to attempt a conversion using a 92 cherokee as a donor, will I have to worry about the CAD?
87MJTIM
Not at all. It is a 10 minute procedure. Besure to have a pan to collect the oil that WILL drip out. Get some gear oil to top off the diff.
Incommando
Well the '92 won't be CAD IIRC. No need to screw with it at all
87MJTIM
I think Jeep changed from CAD to one piece in 96. All MJs have the CAD.

gogmorgo
My January 22nd build '91 had a CAD. Don't know if that's early, though, if the model year change is in the summer.

For the '91 I am going on what I read here as I have not personally seen a factory '91 4wd. Mine is converted. I do know that '92 was fo' sho' CAD-free as I knew someone who bought one new and kept it until 2010.
ggcnash
Yep, they were mixed in 91 but the 91 FSM shows non cad and I have a 91 XJ donor that is non cad all original, but have seen some cases like yours have vacuum disco but they are fewer than their counterpart. Boilermaker
My January 22nd build '91 had a CAD. Don't know if that's early, though, if the model year change is in the summer. It also could have been swapped in by a previous owner. My 92 had a CAD when i bought it. I know it was swapped in by a previous owner because my truck came off the assembly line as a 2WD according to the build sheet.
gogmorgo
Got my build sheet from Chrysler, it was 4x4 its whole life. The axle looks original and I have no reason to suspect otherwise, and the truck was and still is almost completely stock, but it did have 290,000 miles when I got it, so it's always possible.
