Exhaust On 2.5L

Recommended Posts

ok, after tires, my truck will be getting a new exhaust system. I looked on youtube and imho the thrush turbo sounds like crap on the 2.5. I was thinking about either a magnaflow (which sounded really good on my 2.0l 99 vw) or a cherry bomb extreme. thoughts, comments, and opinions GO

so basically I'm stuck with a $#!&ty sounding exhaust no matter what.

If that's how you wish to look at it, sure. You're never going to get the deep sound a Corvette or angry bees sound of a stainless exhaust equipped Civic out of a 2.5.

How I like to look at it is if you can't make your exhaust sound good, make your exhaust sound quiet. Your neighbors/parents/spouse will surely appreciate your efforts in sound suppression. As a bonus, you will be able to hear your stereo more clearly, and not have to yell for passengers to hear you while carrying on a conversation.

No, no, no. If it is quiet, you can't hear it. If you cannot hear it, it cannot sound '$h!#y'.

Granted, you must realize we all are voicing our opinions. What you like is probably different.

If I had $$$ to spend and I wanted to experiment, I would try a Hi Flow Cat and glasspack with 2.5" pipe past the glasspack with the 2.5. Heck, my 2.5 with the exhaust cut past the gutted cat wasn't unbearable, but I didn't like it.

The reason NO aftermarket exhaust can sound good on a 2.5L is that you have a basic 4-cylinder engine with a mild factory cam and a single exhaust, and the compression ratio isn't especially high. The pulses are evenly spaced and the cam has moderately long duration and moderate overlap, so by the time the exhaust gets to the outlet of the tailpipe it's more or less a uniform flow, not a series of individual pulses.

If you want it to sound more "macho," you'll have to invest in a more aggressive cam, something with higher lift and shoter duration that will generate more distinct power pulses.

now this makes sense.

to you other folks: I do not like a quite exhaust note, I like a rumble or a rasp, not that crappy buzz of a civic. here is a somewhat decent video of what my 2.0l vw sounded like with a magnaflow cat back system. (2.5")

my stepdad and uncle who are into american muscle and v8 trucks admitted to liking the sound of my exhaust.

Swap out the motor for something with serious horsepower. Its a waste of money trying to get a 4cyl to sound like something its not. Stick with OEM until your ready to beef it up the right way and get the sound you want.

Wow... for someone who doesn't like quiet... is the car even running??? I've watched it a few times, and I'm still not sure that I'm not hearing a plane fly over head...

it was recorded with a canon powershot camera, it actually sounded awsome in person. had a loud drone at hwy speeds though, the ex-gf hated it and it did bother me sometimes (not to often though)
