Being Jeepers and off roaders, we all carry a tool box in our Jeeps. Right? Sometimes it's just one box for the garage and placed in the Jeep as needed. Others have two, or more, one for the garage and one in the Jeep. Question is, do you have good tools in the Jeep or Harbor Freight cheapos? Why carry good tools in the Jeep where they can get lost or stolen? But then again being broke down is no time for a cheapo that's going to break when you need it the most. Been buying, collecting tools for over 65 years and I only own quality, Craftsman, SK and Proto. Just wanting to see if I can start a discussion. I also believe a .50 cal ammo can can't be beat for a truck tool box. :MJ 1:

I carry good stuff (Craftsman and Cobalt mostly), since that's what I own. I hate breaking cheap tools. :fs1:

got 4 ammo boxes in the back. though I don't have tools in them. just spare parts and spare liquids.

I've only got one set of basic tools, and they're stored in my truck to save room in my dorm room. That and I don't really use them for anything else, so it's better to run out to the truck for them instead of not having them if something breaks on the road.

Benchmark 80pc socket set, two 9-pc Benchmark wrench sets (SAE and metric) a bunch of MasterCraft screwdrivers that I've had forever, and a few random pairs of pliers and other stuff. Mostly stuff I collected when it was needed, or got for christmas as a kid. Not likely worth more than $150 new. It's all store-brand stuff, but for Canadian stores, so you might not get the brands in the US. Don't know how it compares to Harbour Freight. All kept behind the passenger seat, along with my emergency stuff. The screwdrivers are in a toolbox, the sockets in their carrying case, and the wrenches in their cloth rolls, but otherwise loose.

I bought a set of Taskforce that comes in a carrying case. Which is basically the cheaper version of Kobalt tools. It covers the majority of repairs that would need to be done under the hood or the interior. It would not cover fixing anything that broken on the suspension.

I have an emergency tool kit, cheapo version of most commonly needed stuff, that usually resides in one of my vehicles. Tool box is at the shop as a heated/air conditioned shop with a concrete floor beats a gravel driveway any time for working on vehicles. Last house had a double attached garage and a 24x32 pole building with 10 foot ceiling and 16x9 door; I got spoiled there.

When going off road the tool box gets moved either inside the tow rig/camper or into my truck's bed, securely strapped down. It weighs well over 100 pounds. Mostly decent quality (Craftsman, Napa), some good stuff (Snap On) and a few HF pieces because they have a lifetime warranty are close to the junk yard. Closer than Sears anyway. Some time this week a $19 Proto (Stanley) socket will be added to it.

On a side note, Ace Hardware also carries Craftsman now. Advance Auto Parts carried Craftsman at one point, but hasn't anymore for a number of years now.

I got a diamond plate gull wing box behind the cab. With its contents I can do anything on the side of the road from electrical, parts swap, fluid changes, etc. Basically I can do anything that doesn't require a lift, hoist or heavy jack. I have a mix of tools from cheap to name brands.

Don't off road, on purpose anyway, so my carry tools needs are minimal - - - - Most important is my cell phone, then, in the cab are the factory tool/jack/wheel change stuff & a tire plug kit in the glove comp - - In the bed box is/are jumper cables, small 12V tire inflator, 40 pc 3/8 drv socket set, 10 thru 19mm combo wrenches, couple flat & philips SDs, slip joint & needle nose pliers, box knife & in a trash bag: duct tape, few cable ties, old but still good fuel filter, few old spark plugs & wires & few feet mechanics wire - Mostly inexpensive HF stuff - on the DS front tire valve stem is a metal cap with the stem core removal/install thingy/whatever it's called - Used to carry Fix a Flat but never used it & can got so old looking that I lost confidence & tossed it. Also an autograph book in case I run into Elvis at the local Quick Trip.

Been lucky

both the xj and the wife's van have a cheap set of tools with a few additions, one is a crescent set with sockets/wrenches/screwdrivers/some hex bits/allens. got that in high school as a gift years ago, mostly still there too. the other is a roadside special (fell out of someones truck or something): craftsman set with 1/4 and 3/8 sockets, and extra space i threw some other various tools in. if i'm going on a trip or know i need more, i have several tool boxes or bags that get loaded up with various tools from my work box, which is mostly snapon/matco/mac. once i loaded up the xj with everything to pull a motor and change the clutch in a saturn sw1 and drove 6 hours to the IL/WI boarder to help out a buddy. even threw the 33 gallon compressor in back for air supply, just used an engine lift provided by his now father in law.

Have a bit of the usual things in mine;

Jumper Cables

50/50 Anti F. - H20

Spare quart of 10w-40 (most of the time)

Set of Metrinch sockets / wrenches (hands down the best set I've ever had)

Assortment of screwdrivers, clamps, and various fuses.

Brake cleaner and lube, for those times you gotta' grease something up.

Also, gotta love those .50 cal boxes. Very nice for a junkyard tool kit, if I do say so myself.

Also, anyone got a recommendation on a good torque wrench to do big repairs with (disassembling engine, rear axle swaps, etc.) ? I remember a thread a while back with the discussion on this, but haven't found any good deals for a while on one.
