This isnt a real big problem, but since the day i bought my truck it has had a manual toggle to engage the starter, the key works for everything else, except for starting the truck. I was about 98% sure the problem lied with the starter relay, so i bought a new one, unplugged all the wires coming off of it and promptly forgot where in the hell any of them went.

They all have the same connectors and there are five of them, there are also 5 tabs on my relay, 2 for the SOL tab. If anybody has a good discription as to where each wire SPECIFICALLY goes i would appreciate it immensly. I know the Relay has lables on it, but what good does that do me if i don't know what the wires go to?

i need something like. . . black/white wire goes to tab labled 'G', orange wire goes to tab labled 'I' so on and so forth. There is also a large stud that is part of the relay that a whole buttload of wires go to, what do they all do?

thanks folks

Is that really the starter relay?

I though that was the peice that while the altetnator is charging and apllying the right amount of voltage or amperage to power up the rest of the electronics to the truck...

Correct me if I'm wrong.....

:hmm: not exactly sure what you're talkin about, but i know for sure that this is the starter relay. I can't imagine why the alt would be wired to this. and when you google "jeep comanche starter relay" this is what comes up.

Its probably one of the tabs that belong to the starter...because I'm just as confused as you are....think about it why would so many wires connect to that specific.peice?

Have u tried tracing some of the connections back to the other end of the wires?

I turn my back for one second and BAM theres a ton of posts :laughin: . 88Whitemanche, I acutally already have that pic saved to my computer and yes i have tried tracing the wires to no avail. And thats with the entire wiring harness pulled and layed out. When i try and trace them i find they split off mulitply times, and when the whole harness is still encased in electrical tape and corrigated hose it makes it damn near impossible to do anything without tearing it completely apart.

I will take a look at your link too minibeast.

Hmmm...don't you just hate electrical well mot knowing what wires go to what?

I did a little wiring the other day but mainly wiring for the starter oil pressure sender a/c and I forgot what else was connected to that but those pcs mainly fall into those connections well maybe 2 of the mini ports and the stud has 3 different kinds ill take pics later on to show what I'm talking about

ftpiercecracker1 - PM me with your e-mail and I'll e-mail you a photo of the starter relay wiring on my 88 MJ, Have it on my iPad and can't seem to get it to Photobucket.

Let this be a lesson to all of us that slowing down and using a piece of paper to draw a diagram on, and labeling wires with masking tape is a real time saver.

Finally got the photo of the starter relay in my 88 MJ uploaded to Photobucket (I think).

All the wires on the post terminals have ring terminals ends and all look like they have fusible links about 4" to 6" from the ring terminal end. The wires on the post include:

A large diameter blue

a small orange

an orange and a green together on one terminal

two greens together on one terminal

There will also be a large red that comes from the positive terminal on the battery - on my truck this red wire comes off the red (positive) battery cable that goes to the starter.

Going clockwise from the post terminal, the wires on the spade terminals are:

1. Green

2. Black with white stripe

3. Green

4. Orange (I think it may have a black stripe - will look again if needed)

1, 2 & 4 come out of the same wiring loom and 3 comes out of a separate loom and looks a little larger, maybe one wire size.

The starter relay is used as a distribution point via the stud and fusible links. The alternator connect at the stud through a fusible link. There should be about an 8 gauge wire connected directly to the battery, all other connections at this point should be smaller size wire due to the fusible links. The starter motor power should be directly wired to the battery via 4 gauge wire. .

The other wires that connect through the Spades are: Ground, ignition switch (start loc), to starter relay, and fuel pump. I don't recall if there is just a diode internally or if there are separate contact plates to prevent the fuel pump from back feeding and running the starter.

At least one the 4.0, the fuel pump has it's own relay and is not driven by the starter relay. Don't know about the 2.5 and the 2.8 has a mechanical pump.

On the 4.0 during "start" the relay activates the fuel pump relays and powers the fuel pump. When not in "start" the the starter relay has no effect on the fuel pump, however the wire at the relay will still show power, hence why the relay has a diode or separate contact for the starter solenoid and fuel pump. I'm positive on this one.

"ballast resistor" fuel pump control

The two green wires have me confused, the only difference i can see between the two is that one of them has an opening on the connector and the other is solid, no slit. I guess the easiest way to tell is to see which green wire goes to the starter.
