Dude- read the replies in your other post. The MJ springs are 57" eye to eye. XJ springs are 52" eye to eye. Even if you could get them to bolt up, which you probably can't, the shackles are going to be all wrong. I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that won't work.

I have SOA with stock MJ springs and super duty shocks off an FSJ to absorb the bounce. Works well for me, but not a lot of flex off road (just the front does that and I'm okay with that for where I go)

Spring over with stock MJ rear leafs will net you about 5" of lift, right?

 

What would a spring over using stock XJ leafs do??

If you went through the large amount of trouble to mount them, their shorter length would result in less flex, and theoretically, you'd get no lift, as an MJ and XJ at stock height are about the same.

I think the best solution for your dilemma is a junkyard bastard pack. Find a SOA vehicle that has 2." wide leafs and an eyeto eye mesurement close to the MJ's.

Even if you kept the MJ main leaf and buil a bastard pack with the rest.

I'm shortening my wheelbase!! I have a long bed, using XJ leafs will move my axle forward a few inches!!.

 

I'm well aware of the length differences in the MJ and XJ springs, I build Jeeps!

 

Remounting the rear spring hangers isn't hard to do at all.

Anyway... just to clarify this.

 

THE LEAFS ARE 2.5" wide.

i've never measured, but aren't MJ leafs 2.5" wide, not 2"?

We're not psychic. It would have helped if you had bothered to explain what you were doing. How are we supposed to "realize" what you're doing if you don't tell us?

But, the problem is.... If you're building your own hangers frame side, what the leaf pack will do is almost entirely up to you. The XJ leaves are very near flat - sometimes inverse if they're old... So, if you used the stock forward hanger you'd probably have about no lift. Or maybe an inch - I think the MJ one is lower than the XJ. That's providing you locate the rear hanger in the ideal point for the leaf pack.

Aren't XJ owners constantly complaining that there's no flex in their leafs? MJ leafs are some of the best leafs out there! jamminz.gif

Anyhoo, it's pretty obvious you can't use XJ leafs on an MJ without mods, so why would anyone assume thats what I meant. My orginal question just asks what would happen if you did a SOA with XJ leafs... and NOBODY answered my question, except one guy (Thanks DirtyComanche!) Everyone else just bashed me. Gee thanks, you are cool :nuts:

 

I'm trying to shorten my wheelbase, so an XJ leaf is an easy way to do this without moving my front spring hanger or chopping a section out of the frame. I'm still not sure what I'll end up doing.

 

I just wish I had a shortbed to begin with.

I think the idea is worth a shot. You can get lift XJ leaves pretty cheap if it winds up too short. Or bastardize them by reusing some of the lower leafs out of the MJ packs you have to tune them to the right height. They don't flex the best - but they aren't the worst either. Most of the guys with lifted XJs are complaining because they have way too stiff of springs.

 

 

You just have to figure out the correct location of the rear hanger. Like I said, if you mess it up there will be nasty consequences. My front leaves do weird things because of this - and it will probably destory them given enough time.

 

 

For the starting point of the rear hanger I'd go foreward 6" from stock, and down 6", measured from the stock hanger bolt (the one that goes through the top of the shackle) - as this should adjust for using those roller shackles and for the loss of spring length. The problem is that you can't tell if it is right without putting the weight of the truck on them. My front looked fine until I set the truck down on it.

 

 

And if you can't make it work, look at more darastic things... Like chopping the rear frame and building a coil suspension.

I actually will probably use the shorter XJ leaf, and cut down my MJ add a leaf that I already have and use this AAL in a stock XJ pack, that way I still get the soft stock pack instead of a stiff new lift pack. Maybe add a shorty bottom leaf from my MJ pack to get a little extra height.

 

It's a 4.5" AAL for an MJ leaf pack. Using this in a XJ pack will curve the springs some, probably only 3" 3.5" or so, since I will have to make it shorter. Thats all I have around to work with.

 

I'll probably have to make my rear hanger a good bit lower, to get me up to 6.5" of lift in the back to match my front. Especailly with the slider hanger?? Should be interesting trying to get the damn thing to sit level, but hey... it a project right?

 

One cool thing I'm contemplating doing is making some kind of buggy leaf or "goofy" leaf on the back to allow for lots of droop. Upward flex won't be an issue, I'll need more droop.

 

Anyone use a "goofy" leaf on their MJs before??

Buggy shackles, or 3/4 elliptical, have their own problems.

 

 

If you do run them, 3 things...

 

 

You'll get massive axlewrap without a traction bar. Even then, you'll blow up traction bars...

 

You'll need a long travel driveshaft (pricey...)

 

They are inherently unstable when going downhill, or sidehilling.
