jpnjim
I don't know how this slipped by me. We used a toaster for as long as I can remember. Had one of those big stainless ones with 4 slots, and life was good. Then we went to a toaster oven, and that also ACTUALLY toasted stuff. You know, put nice, dark, semi-burnt lines in whatever you put in it. Fast forward to today. The 4 slicer is long gone, the original toaster oven we had died a couple years ago, AND NOTHING I BUY TODAY ACTUALLY TOASTS ANYMORE. :headpop: We've tried new toaster ovens, even went back to old fashioned toasters, but they only heat stuff up now, no actual TOASTING anymore. If you keep putting the bread/English muffin/waffle back in, eventualy it gets hard as a rock, but will never actually toast. Rant off. Anyone else run into this, or just me? 86customanche
Thats terrible, toasters should definitely toast what is put in them. I bought a toaster about 3 years ago as my most recent and it works great. Maybe you need to look for older, maybe used toasters. They seem to last a very long time. jimoshel
FINALLY!! A useful meaningful rant about something gawd awful instead of all that moaning, pitiful "woe is me" crap. If I had a toaster that didn't toast properly, it would be in the trash so fast!!!!! :fs1:

Blue88Comanche
mom has a toaster oven, she burns her toast or it is under toasted... but i have managed to toast bread to a nice golden brown, almost every time i use it. i think where she messes up is she does not turn the temp all the way up. her toaster has 3 nobs, top for temp and it gets cranked all the way up for toast, middle to control what heating elements to use, and the bottom is a timer. some of our little ovens have done better than others, and our ovens you had to stand there and remove the toast once it was ready or risk charcoal. AMCJeepMJ
We have a toaster and a toaster oven. Both work great at making things singed/crispy/incinerated as well as just warming them when I want them to. Both were picked up at Target IIRC. Maybe you've just had bad luck? Sir Sam
I never got the toast thing. I just don't desire it.
jpnjim
I knew I could count on the Comanche guys for support and answers :D The whole not toasting thing went unnoticed by me for a while, since I was making chocolate chip eggo's and they are already brownish right out of the box. Switching back to plain eggo's told the tale. They come out the same pale color they went in as, only warmer. Leaving them in longer just makes pale hard as rocks, waffles. I'm gonna try another new toaster, and report back these important findings.;) thanks for the advice.:D
jpnjim
I never got the toast thing. I just don't desire it. You don't like toast? or you don't like anything TOASTED? (bagel, waffle, english muffin)? Are you sure you're not doing it wrong? ;)

jimoshel
Is the toaster, oven a micro wave type or a heating element type? If it's microwave it will never brown. They don't work that way. If it's heating element it should brown. If it doesn't, somethings wrong.
MJRemi
Necessity is the Mother of all inventions. I'm going to run all the way to the bank with the idea you guys have instilled in me. I'm going to buy loaves of various sliced breads, toast every slice, and then repackage it to be sold as Toast Loaf. I'll even sell raw toast to folks like Sam. Who else wants in, besides Jim?
HOrnbrod
Well, obviously jpnjim has moved into his new digs, and is settled in enough to rant about toasters instead of the moving-in nightmares. :D Glad you're all settled in Jim. I have a vintage (1960-ish) Sunbeam 4-slot toaster inherited from my Mom about twenty years ago. Chrome plated deco sides and weighs about 15 pounds. It still toasts everything perfectly, and the slots are wide enough to toast today's hot dog rolls, hamburger rolls, and even bread. It applies the heater coil grid burn marks on both sides, and the inside is perfect. It's priceless...........
DirtyComanche
I don't have a toaster, or a toaster oven. Well, I had a toaster, but apparently when I moved in 2009 (I think) I decided I didn't need it anymore. Or maybe it's at my parent's house. Regardless, I just use my oven. Works perfect. Put the rack as high as possible, throw the bread in (if I'm toasting it, it's because it's frozen bread), set oven to bake @ 350 degrees, wait a couple minutes, flip bread over, wait a couple more minutes, and it's golden brown with grid marks. Geonovast
I have a toaster, and a toaster over. The toaster is a cheap $8 Black and Decker that I got about 6 years ago, and it works great. Toasts pretty evenly. Never made toast in the toaster over, it's usually been used for small pizzas, pizza rolls, chicken nuggets, etc.

I have some pics to post, but don't have the interwebz at the new house yet. BTW, I'm still using the crappy back up toaster at the new house that is just as bad as the crappy toaster oven at the old house.
Automan2164
I might have some porn for you guys. I am doing a whole house cleanse, and I found something on a shelf in the basement I have no use for... Older than me by a longshot. IIRC, the girlfriends dad gave it to us... In box. The box has since been lost. I never plugged it in, but her dad had used it. I have no use for it... But I am trying to think of a creative way to put it up for grabs. Rated for 8.3 amps.
