Paul Bruchal
All I'm needing to complete my lift is longer break lines, shocks, and a pit man arm. I was looking on 4wd.com for shocks but I don't know what size to get. I'm doing the SOA size of lift. Isnt that 5.5" lift? 4wd.com doesn't go buy the lift size you have it goes buy the length the shock travels??? Which I have no idea how big of a shock a 5.5" shock is. They have pro-comp shocks for $29, or buy one of there "supper shocking deals", which brand would you go with?
SW86
go flex and measure. its really that simple. just measure both sides for the collapsed and extended lengths. stock pitman arm should be fine
Paul Bruchal
I should flex with my stock setup? I don't know how that would help. and I have like 6" coils for the front, I should really stay with stock pit man arm? and thinking of it, should i also be looking for track bar?? great, more money=/ lol
Pete M
What all have you purchased so far? just coils?
mnkyboy
It all depends on how you mount the shocks so shock length varies from one rig to another. As stated the best way is to install the lift without shocks and then flex it out, then you can figure out exactly what shocks you need. Some 4x4 shops have an RTI ramp that you can use,at the shop we do it with a forklift.
Paul Bruchal
I bought: Used coils off a XJ with 33" tires, SOA perches, Lower control arm drop brackets. Its a mall crawler until I can afford a SYE kit.
cody4359
I'm sure they don't go by lift size because people run different size tires. if you know anybody with a forklift just use that to lift up the corners of your truck. and i would stay away from the cheapo shocks, had procom es9000 on mine then threw on some bilesteine 5125's and noticed quite a nice difference. I'm sure youll want to extend you bumpstops so you don't cave your fenders in or tear up your tires. when its flexed out on the RTI ramp or forklift that would be a good time to measure what youll need. Paul Bruchal
The closest offroad shop is 45 min away. Is it okay to drive that long without shocks? I bought: Used coils off a XJ with 33" tires, SOA perches, Lower control arm drop brackets. Its a mall crawler until I can afford a SYE kit. Motion Offroad
For a SOA in the rear of a MJ with shock mounts in factory location you'll need the following; Extended ~30" | Collapsed ~17"| Travel ~12"-13" These measurements are aprox (~) for a 6.5" lift height, and we advise you measure your application to confirm. -Adam
COMANCHEROB4WD
:agree: Beat me to it. And like Adam said you should measure. SOA can get you anywhere from 5.5" and up depending on what springs, etc. If you have questions or need help give me a call...I work at 4WD and my info is listed below. mnkyboy
Just keep in mind that is with the shocks in the factory location hanging below the axle. If you move the mounts like most people do you will need shorter shocks.

Ive seen the rear shocks go diagonal like a X
SW86
you mean like a upside down V not an X...?.. and I'm sure you make your own but i bought some sweet @$$ shock mounts from barnes4x4 for like 15 bucks.
mnkyboy
Seems that most of the guys who v their shocks mount them to the top of the tube and just use stock shocks. And why are you worried about a SYE? You don't need one.
Paul Bruchal
Yes, I meant upside down V. It been awhile since I seen that thread. I thought that after +4" lift, I would need a SYE? IDK, Ill try to flex and see what comes undone. CAN YOU TELL i NEVER DID THIS BEFORE? lol
freakjeep93
you don't need a sye on a mj
mnkyboy
I thought that after +4" lift, I would need a SYE? That's for XJs. our drive lines are much longer so the geometry isn't as bad. An SYE would be nice to have eventually but its not needed.
Pete M
you'll need that longer track bar. and longer brake lines. and longer sway bar links.
89eliminator
you don't need a sye on a mj i don't agree with that. i had pretty bad vibration problems when i was even at 4.5" of lift. thats on a shortbed.
Pete M
individual results may vary. :D
mnkyboy
I have no vibration with 6.5" of lift on a short bed. You sure you didn't have a bad u-joint or a bent/out of balance drive shaft?
SW86
no vibs for me either at 4.5. something else was wrong there. you'll need that longer track bar. and longer brake lines. and longer sway bar links. whats a sway bar? :D
89eliminator
nope, everything was new. i don't care, i have a SYE and its been a great improvement.
SW86
who knows what it was then. probably one of those "things" that happens. ive thought about an SYE and a tom woods just because i can. i mean it would be an improvment over the stock $#!& anyway
