dana 44 front

Ok..I have a bonehead question. A guy on southernjeeps.org is selling some axles (ford 9"/d44) out of a 79. He had them under his xj apparently. I was under the impression to keep the same width(without mods) MJ'ers were limited to the d30 or the rubicon 44...Am I wrong? :nuts:

Nope, you are right. The fullsize ford axles will make the tires stick out more than now (especially up front). Of course, that didn't stop me from putting 78 Ford axles under my 88 MJ. :D

Plus, if you tried to install only that Dana 44 front, then you would have mismatched axles width AND a mismatch in wheel bolt pattern.

Is the same combo I'm putting under my xj soon, got the axles at home right now.. waiting on gears/lockers/install kits to come in the mail :)

 

Then off to my buddies shop to have the brackets made/welded on...

 

It WILL stick out, yep!!

 

But if you get some neg offset rims you can make it look pretty clean, and way stable!

 

Not to mention, that combo, with factory guts/joints is STRONG up to a 36"... upgrades splines, shafts, ujoints, can run 40's locked all day.

Grand Wagoneer D44 fronts are 61.5" WMS-WMS, which is .5" wider than the stock turdy. But yeah, it's not going to bolt in...

 

 

Also, EB fronts are 58" wide (again, D44). And Toy fronts are something like 59-60" wide (wrong side pumpkin).

I am going with the Rubi D44, it is a direct bolt in. This is just the new D44 housing, the shafts are still on back-order;

Yep they are wide.......my rig is 83" outside of front tires. WMS to WMS on my 78 F150 axel is 67".

My axel is out of an extended cab F150 which is the same axel as the F250......only differance is the brakes/wheel bolt pattern. The extended cab F150's have leaf springs instead of radius arms/coils......no cast in brackets and the tubes are 1/2" thick instead of 3/8" like the cast bracket varieties.

Extended cab F150's from 78/79 are a lttle hard to find now......in my area anyway ( RUST ) :oops:

That's a new one on me. I thought all the 78-79 F-150's were coils with cast mounts. I know the 78-79 F-250's are leaf spring fronts. Well...

all but the Snow Fighter and Camper Specials. jamminz.gif

Pre 77 ford d44's had weld on brakcets, thust they could be cut off and recsold onebay. the 78-79 ones have some issues. the cast "C" are suppose to be the weak link... I don't think so, but what do I know. Also the 78-79 F250 axles are different in a couple ways. First 8 lug, second uses dual piston calipers, third the inner shafts are not the same as the inners on the f150 ford. Not sure hwta the difference is, but a guy in the club had to order his alloys special cause the regular d44 inners would not work

Yep the inner shafts are longer on the F250 D44......by about 1". These are the shafts that my F150 extended cab D44 uses.......it is the exact same thing as the F250 except that it uses the 5x5.5 wheel pattern and has single piston callipers.

The 78/79 F150 extended cab even uses the F250 style steering linkage etc.....I had to modify a Bronco linkage to work on my rig.

I used the 9" rear out of the extended cab F150 as well.....

 

I have 2 sets of F250 inner/outter shafts for spares , F150/Bronco axel shafts are not long enough.
