comancheman
i always thought that if u counted how many times the driveshaft spins to spin the hub once was your gear ratio but when i tried this i spun the dshaft 1.5 times and the hub spun once. I'm pretty sure that 1.5 gears werent an option. any help?
feerocknok
spin the tire 20 times and count the driveshaft rotations, then divide the driveshaft rotations you got by 10.
comancheman
so i went and counted again i only spun the wheel once and got 1.75 rotations on the dshaft then multiplied 1.75 by 20 and divided by 10 i ended up with 3.5 i know this wasnt an available ratio. maybe sum1 knows what the ratio would be. its a 1990 4.0 auto short bed 4x4 d35 rear maybe a 3.07? JOMJ87
Could be 3.55 if you came up with 3.5???? Cole
comancheman
but i didnt think that was an available ratio. i think my math is off because i only spun it once and it doesnt compensate for all the partial turns
DirtyComanche
3.55 was an avaliable ratio. 98% of time it's what you have if you have a 4.0/AW4.
ejndssn
get a laser level and try the calculations again this may satisfy your curiosity. Would agree with the rest of the most likely a 3.55 based on the initial findings. :brows:

mike
you want to know for sure, take the cover off and look on the ring gear, it'll have the ratio stamped on it. :D
comancheman
so i pulled the cover and the number stamped on the ring gear was 335. did they mean 355?
newbs
I think 98% of the time would understatement, that was pretty much the exclusive for the auto on the manche and cheroke except for the few that got 3.73 and I am looking for a frontend with that ratio
87manche
What drivetrain is in your comanche? the basic rules are this: 2.5L 5 spd-4.10 4.0 5 spd-3.07 4.0-auto-3.55 There are some exceptions, I have a pair of 3.73 geared axles under my junk, and the 2.5L with a 4 spd got 3.55. Most likely if you've got a 4.0 and an auto it's 3.55 if you want to know for sure, take the cover back off, find all the numbers on the ring gear and then post them. JOMJ87
I have a set of 3.73 I will sell. :brows: Cole
Pete M
3.73 were pretty common in Grand Cherokees. Just make sure to get one that is high pinion and running U-joints.
