87'ComancheLaredo
Well, just so everyones not in the dark let me give a back story I hate my current job working for Keystone Automotive. Its like harassment central for me (only girl under the age of 40, and drives equiptment.) Its terrible to say the least. SO, at the beginning of this week I printed out several copies of my resume and just dropped them off with managers at every store I saw. On thursday, I got a call back from Marshalls (the clothing store) and they asked if I was interested in the LP position. I was like "well, I'm not exactly sure what the job desciption entails..." but I went for the interview anyway. It turns out that LP means Loss Prevention. They saw my 3 years of law enforcement and decided that I would be a good person for it The regional manager was a real nice guy, and he said "well, not only would it be here, but you would be loss prevention manager for the one in dickson city too. But we pay you to travel. And after the first few months or so you will be going for training either to philly, boston, baltimore, or florida. well you will have to go to all of them just a differant order." the pay is more than I'm getting now, and I get a raise rather early. Its full time and Ill have benefits(which is good since I don't have insurance AT ALL at this point) Ive only found 2 problems with this, 1.) the traveling alone. 2.) the unpredictable hours. but all in all, ive been crazy excited about it, and I'm actually going to be calling the regional manager back after i post this to schedule my second interview with the detective. Just thought Id share my excitement. and throw in the fact that since I'm going to have a normal job, my comanche will be my DD finally!! :)
terrawombat
Congrats on being able to find a new job, especially a full-time one with benefits. I'm not sure how they compensate you for travel time, but if it's the way my office handles it, it could be a bonus in disguise. I get 58.5 cents per mile, which are to cover all cost incurred in using your own vehicle for company business. This includes fuel, insurance, maintenance, and other associated costs with the general upkeep of your car (includes as many car washes that I want and a complete interior/exterior detail if I drive over a certain mileage in a given year). Now, you run the risk of having your car break down and spending lots of money repairing it, but if you're anything like me, you do all of your own work and get your replacement parts from junkyards and are able to keep your vehicles going on the cheap. This year alone, after fuel, insurance, and maintenance costs on my XJ, I made around 4 grand from travel expenses. I use it to add new vehicles to my fleet and maintain the existing ones :D

dasbulliwagen
That is sooo cool! You need to take it if they offer it! If for anything the experience alone. That is one of those jobs that isnt going anywhere, and will always be needed! And you get to put the smackdown on a buch of little punks stealing shiznit! Youre still young enough that the time travelling won't matter, so... Just do it!
whowey
Traveling by yourself really isn't that bad once you get the hang of it. You can always eat what you want. If you don't feel like eating... you don't have to. No waiting around for someone else to get their butt in gear. Also you can usually find someone to have an interesting conversation with. I sat next to a gentleman who was on the negotiating committee from the post office union and he was on his way to DC for discussions about closing the post office on Saturday and its effects. It was really interesting to hear his thoughts on the subject and not just the soundbites on the news. And remember.. always treat the folks in the hospitality industry with respect. They work just as hard as you, they have the same types of frustration everyday as you..
Comanche County
Good for you! Most big retailers have someone like that and I'm betting you'll nab plenty of no-good-doers. Could be a stepping stone to something bigger later on...good luck.

"98% of everyone here I really don't like, those 2% of you I do like I feel sorry for because your going to be stuck here, but I hope we stay in touch. and to my boss, a big FU & I'm OUT" theres alot more I'm going to end up saying, but you get the point. lol

dasbulliwagen
NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER BURN ANY BRIDGES!!!! If and when you get the new job, POLITELY go into your old job, GIVE 2 WEEKS NOTICE, thank them for your time with them, and let them know that new opportunities await you, and you have to take them. I speak from experience here. Screwed that pooch more than once. If you are currrently on good terms with your existing job, keep it that way as you leave! You never know what the future may bring, and you just MIGHT have to go crawling back, and they will welcome you with open arms. Weather you like it or not... it is a possibility, and if you have that door to use to go back, its like a little insurance policy for you. Please just be nice. That kind of a response can catch up to you in some of the strangest & most unexpected of circunstance. I've interviewed and hired many employees that found out that during their temporary trial period of employment their suitability to be retained was continuing to be researched. I often personally visited their former employers to do a little mining on their resume and interview info provided. It often was a decider in whether the person was considered retainable material beyond the temporary hire period. Efficiency, proficiency, reliabilty, honesty, are all traits that have to be considered to avoid a bad employee investment by empolyers. So they get the info where-ever and how-ever. Good luck on your new endeavor.
shawn
although, many former employers are dueche-nozzles and are incapable of giving an honest or reliable assesment of their former employees ( other than reporting missed time). often too much emphasis is placed on what former employers have to report. people move-on for a reason.
