johngus
Is there any potential problems I should be aware of in swapping a rear d35 from an xj onto my MJ. Please advise
JOMJ87
Spring perches not wide enough for your MJ. Thats the main issue another is the gearing matching your front one. Cole
DansGreyMj
why bother going thru the trouble of swapping in a d35 just look for an xj d44 or an explorer 8.8 and only go thru the swap one time
johngus
I've been looking for a d44 for my XJ. I'm lifting mj MJ in the next few weeks and had a set of axles from a former xj I was hoping to use.
GirsMJ86
the 8.8 will be really easy to find, plus there are kits, if you don't want to do it yourself, to make it work for your MJ. Alex
johngus
Are there any particular year/s explorer I should look for?
GirsMJ86
Are there any particular year/s explorer I should look for? the ones with the disc brakes. i can't remember the years right now though but someone else will say for sure. Alex
Pete M
95-01 Explorer have disks, but the older ones are just as strong and the drums are still better than your Dana 35 brakes. The key is getting the right gear ratio. Nows the time to consider an upgrade if you have larger tires. 8.8s can be had in 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10. car-part.com can help with your search for an axle. Oh, and it has to come from an Explorer/Mountineer, as any other 8.8 will either have the wrong wheel bolt pattern, be the wrong width, or be of inferior strength. Check these sites for pointers on the 8.8 swap: http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/ford88.html http://xjfanatic.com/ford88.php Oh, and XJ perches are farther apart than MJ perches, not the other way around. DirtyComanche
Oh, and XJ perches are farther apart than MJ perches, not the other way around. Are we sure? Back in 5!
DirtyComanche
They are. Sad how I can never be sure.
Pete M
Are we sure? Yes. XJ leafs are outboard of the frame rails, while MJ leafs are directly below. But MJs have a wider frame out back so the difference is only a small amount, but more than enough that the leaf bushings would suffer immensly. Druville
I'm glad i read this, post. i was going to go out and buy the front and rear axles off a xj today. they are off a 4cly 5spd, which I'm told are 4.10s which would be perfect for the 33s i want to put on. i guess i will just wait to upgrade gears when i do the srping over. btw i can get axles way cheap here. a local junk yard only wants $60 for a rear axle complete no matter the truck or car. oh and transmissions are 43, no matter the truck. i love it. johngus
Thanks to all for the information. The 8.8 does look like the much better option. Probably for both of my jeeps.

jeepaholic
I know it was said the 8.8 must come out of an explorer/mountaineer but i believe you can also use one out of a sport trac..Just an explorer w/ a pickup bed..
DirtyComanche
The hell is a sport trac? I don't think they're avaliable here... Anyways, if it is a truck like thing, it might have the ranger 8.8. Which is weaker. And evil.
JOMJ87
The sport trac is as big as the Explorer but has a little bed so it should be the good one. I would THINK........ Cole
Pete M
I've heard no definitive answer on that. We can assume so, but I would take a tape measure to the junkyard to take measurements and even pop the cover to check spline count before plunking down money on a sport-trac. Ford has done some really screwy things over the years. :(
