Different carburetor?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2.8L 1986 Comanche which is sitting outside on some difficult to access property (I don't want to go into the reasons right now). Anyway, the carb is currently dismantled and I hate the thought of trying to adjust it in the two stage installation process that the OE carb mandates. Is it possible to get a different carb, adjust it in my basement and take it up and bolt it on. The questions come down to what carb and how? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks--

This whole post sounds shady to me.

OP, please provide more insight why you have to be sneaky to get this truck recovered.

To all, please do not provide this thread with anything that can be used to get this truck running. My gut tells me he is up to something no good.

Oh, please! If I were into something shady, it would not be a '86 Comanche! I own an out of the way piece of property only accessible at some times of the year. Otherwise it is a hike. I took the Comanche up there and it started malfunctioning. Turned out there was stuff in the gas tank. I changed the filter. I also noted that it was obviously not reaching full power. I diagnosed carb trouble, started dismantling the carbureator for a rebuild, ran into bad weather, and finally said the hell with it: I want something quick and easy to make this work.

Now, aren't you ashamed of yourself?

Not in the least.

How are we to know that you were not stuck on private property (IE: trespassing) trying to get your stuff out of there before the land owner catches you? Or the truck has been sitting there for years and nobody owns it?

Go ahead and laugh but these are some of the things I have seen people try and come on boards asking for guidance on how to fix a Jeep. Stating that there were things "I don't want to go into the reasons right now".

The way you worded the OP it sounded like you were trying to hide something. I am looking out for my friend (Pete) and the members of this board.

So the short answer is no, I am not ashamed of myself in the least.

I guess what I read when I registered for this board doesn't really apply, namely that we should feel free to post our questions. I had already decided that trying to rebuild/reattach a carburetor that requires multiple adjustments in its two-stage bolt-on process was what I was trying to avoid. I have looked at an online carb dealer since my last post and found a carb that will probably work.

Aww, it really isn't like that. Stick around, it is a great site. I didn't see anything insidious in your post, but written words can take on different meanings to different folks. Maybe Shelby had just gotten off of JU before he read your post :).

I'm interested in what you found as a replacement carb for the 2.8. To me that is the biggest downfall to the little GM engine. Can't count how many of those things I rebuilt at the dealership.

And your right

(I didn't) :rotfl2:

I'll have to side with shelbyluvv........your new here, and were all old (posters)

When some one new enters our neighborhood, and posts a "Questionable" question, well, the flags go up. Seen alot of newbies come and go, it's your choice to stay or not, just keep some "personal" remarks to your self, and the flags wouldn't go up ;)

And.......Take Mr. Aemsee's advice, he's been inside more AMC engines than most of us have looked at from the outside :ack:

Well, I decided to let you know how this came out. Took a Weber conversion carb up to the Comanche, bolted it in (it took more time to get the old carb off than the new carb on), put a gas filter on the fuel line, traded out the battery - and the truck started right up. I drove it around, and although I will have to get the vacuum hoses plugged and sorted out, it is now movable.

For those of you who thought that I should have gotten the old carb working, you have no idea how out of the way this property is, on the side of a mountain in a very unpopulated county. So now my utility truck is working, and I am content.

If the goal is just to get the truck started and drive it out, I think I'd drop a few bucks on a junkyard carb for a 2.8L, fire it up, and drive it home. Plenty of time to figure out the next step after the hulk is home.

My dad wanted to buy some property like yours in Michigan's UP. Even the real estate agent hadn't actually seen the property and said unless someone was really ready to buy it he wasn't going to show it. It was 640 acres (1 square mile) with no roads in or out of it completely surrounded by Hiawatha National Forest and most of it was vertical.
