New owner looking for Peugeot advice

Hey guys, recently put a deposit on a 1988 Comanche Pioneer, 5spd, with 120k miles on it. Tires are great, frame is solid, body is a little beat and rusty but I will be fixing and respraying it most likely flat army tan,interior is excellent, and its having a new clutch,resurfaced flywheel, and new slave cylinder lines put in by the owners uncle before I pick it up at his shop. The truck is only costing me $600. I was just curious, how long do the peugot trannys last if not beaten on badly? The only beating this thing will take is very very mild offroading like driving down muddy trails and some snow playing, so the tranny won't be beaten too bad. If this post isn't OK in this thread please let me know and I will delete it and start a new thread elsewhere, thanks alot! Looking forward to hearing from you manche pros!

One note..........Do Not have the Flywheel Resurfaced!!!! :eek:

 

As per the FSM, the OEM flywheel has a Concave surface, and resurfacing it takes out the concave. The only proper way is to replace, with new flywheel. there about $70 and well worth it in the long run.

 

Other wise.........I'm running a BA10, and only have shifting issues when it's cold.

My '88 Cherokee still has the original Peugeot tranny, with 287,000+ miles on it. No problems except, as noted above, it doesn't like to shift into 2nd gear when cold. Guess what? Neither does the AX-15, and neither does the NVG3550 in my 2000 XJ.

 

Also as noted above: DO NOT resurface the flywheel. That's a no-no. :no:

Mine has 230,000 miles on it. leaks a little, doesnt like 2nd in the cold.

 

PS. hate reading about resurfacing :( . Unfortunately, mine was resurfaced at 110,000 mile mark. havent noticed any issues though :dunno:

Seems to be a hit or miss situation. some guys have gotten lucky, some have gotten screwed. as a general rule of thumb, we advise against it since the factory says so. :thumbsup:

Thanks guys, ( and thank you mod for putting this in the appropriate place! I really do appreciate it). I think the owner already had the flywheel resurfaced... Should I just let him put it in or should I tell him that he needs a new one? Maybe I will tell him I will buy it as long as he takes a little off the price or something. Its a great deal already, but I am trying to keep this is low cost as possible. If he had it resurfaced and puts that back in, would I notice a problem immediately? I will be test driving it after the repair prior to purchasing it, what exactly happens when its resurfaced/what should I be feeling for?

If I remember right, the last person who had an issue with resurfacing found out immediately. Clutch wasn't engaging properly.

OK thanks. I think I am going to call the local Dodge/Jeep dealer and ask their technician what they think.

215k miles on mine, whines worse than all my ex's combined in all forward gears.

 

has taken a BEATING. also been ran out of fluid by the P.O. (and me for a little while)

bleeds like hell from the halves.

doesn't like to downshift to 2nd doesn't like to downshift to 4th.

 

all in all its annoying but it works, and has worked for 40k miles that I (a teenager in his first truck/4x4/manual BEAT ON for years)

 

so just be nice to it and ride

Thanks, I think the kid is going to have the resurfaced flywheel put in despite what I told him about it. If there is a problem with it, will I know right away or will it develop over time? Also, is this the flywheel that I want if I were to buy one?

That link you posted is for a "Flex-plate" = Automatic tranny.

 

What you need is a "Fly-wheel" = Manual tranny.

 

You'll also need a pilot bearing for the BA-10, the AX -15 bearing is slightly different.

 

Hard to tell if the 'resurfaced' flywheel will show signs right away, I've read where the clutch disk didn't engage, or slipped really bad at first, and worst latter, to 'never had a problem' :dunno:

 

Your really at the mercy of others when work is done on a vehicle, either the work will be done in a professorial, knowable manner, or it will be band-aided and half passed :eek:

 

Most of the MJ's I've worked on, I can tell right away if something was band-aided........like brake lines replace with compression fitting, and 3-4 pieces in one line........ :shake:

I had mine resurfaced over 2 years ago and have been driving the truck almost every day and haven't had any sliping or engagment isssues. Also have the same shifting issues with my BA/10 when cold into 2nd mostly and reverse is a faint memory. In the process of swaping in the AX-15 right now.

How much does an AX-15 usually run and how do you guys hunt them down? From what I understand I can get them out of 90-92 comanches and certain Grand Cherokees/Wranglers that have the 4.0? If someone could verify what years and models I can get it out of, you just might be my favorite person ever :bowdown:
