  1. My mistake, it is the inline 6 cylinder 4.0. I also wasnt going to actually purchase it until I could drive it and make sure it was OK. Unfortunately there are not a lot of comanches around here, and no Jeeps at all around this price in this kind of condition. I could buy a different truck for the same price, but it will probably have a lot more miles on it... I guess I will have to do some soul searching, haha I was psyched to be getting the truck, this is very upsetting... I wish I had extra money kicking around, I would just go for it. As far as the rust, the frame was solid, it was just the body that was starting to rust and wasn't that bad. I don't care if the body is a little rusted as long as the structural integrity hasnt been compromised at all. The price was excellent, and seemed to be good to be true. We all know that when it seems too good to be true, it probably is, seems like a similar situation here. I just wish I didn't lose 2 weeks of a truck hunt, missed a couple good deals...
  2. \What are you talking about? I was planning on jacking the truck up, then just jamming a piece of wood in there to hold it up higher. Is that rednecky?? :hmm: Less expensive is what I meant, and for the price of spacers and shackles, thats still pretty cheap IMO. Also note, I did say cheapest way without making it crappy :D If I am going to do something poorly I would rather not do it at all, I just wanted to find out if there were acceptable but inexpensive ways to mildly lift a manche for my purposes (like spacers).
  3. I would do that but I have no trailer to take it home. The transmission is already taken apart, (the kid started the project, got it apart, then didnt know what to do and decided to have the Uncle trailer it to his house). I live about an hour from him so renting something would be too costly unfortunately... Also I would feel a little lost starting from it being taken apart, I would feel more comfortable taking it apart myself so I could see exactly how everything went. As far as rust free, it is more or less, has the regular rust around the wheel wells and a few rust spots on the side of the bed, but I wasn't/ am not too worried about it.
  4. So I have some bad news... I was supposed to be picking up a 88' Jeep Comanche Pioneer with 120k on it, v6 5spd, no frame rust, interior mint, tires with probably 60-70% tread, that was having a new clutch and flywheel put into it. The truck is in great shape, supposedly engine and 4x4 work perfect, it only needs a valve cover gasket. We agreed on a price of $600 which I thought was a steal. I get a call tonight and the kids Uncle who was supposed to be fixing it wants another $300 to do it, but I really don't have any extra money to be spending, I would have to borrow it from someone. Is it worth spending extra money on it or should I just move on to something else?
  5. Hey guys, probably going to pick up 5 wheels and tires off of a Jeep Wrangler. The tire size is 30inch, will these fit on a stock 1988 Jeep Comanche? Its a pretty good deal, tires have a little over 50% tread and I am trading him my sub and amp that I don't ever use anymore, and have been trying to sell for $125 with no success for several months... Just want to make sure that they fit before I go pick them up. I am 99% sure they do, I just wanted to double check
  6. How much does an AX-15 usually run and how do you guys hunt them down? From what I understand I can get them out of 90-92 comanches and certain Grand Cherokees/Wranglers that have the 4.0? If someone could verify what years and models I can get it out of, you just might be my favorite person ever
  7. Thanks, I think the kid is going to have the resurfaced flywheel put in despite what I told him about it. If there is a problem with it, will I know right away or will it develop over time? Also, is this the flywheel that I want if I were to buy one?
  8. OK thanks. I think I am going to call the local Dodge/Jeep dealer and ask their technician what they think.
  9. Thank you very much, glad to hear that the 30" tires will be good with a stock setup, I am going to try to grab them if I can, seems like a great deal and nice addition. Where is the best place to order parts from? Also, this is probably a very dumb question, but I am new to trucks, so what is AAL for the rear? Thanks again!
  10. Hey guys, I am sure some will bash for me wanting to go the cheap route, but I am getting this as a secondary winter vehicle, and just want to play a little bit for a low cost if I can. I don't plan on doing any intense offroading at all, just playing on some mud trails and in the snow. I was thinking of doing a 2-3" lift, but was wondering what is the cheapest way to do it without making it crappy? What would you recommend? Also, would 30" tires fit the stock wheel well OK? I found a set of 5 rim/tire combo from a Jeep Wrangler with good tread for $150, and I think that would be a nice upgrade from the stock tiny tires. I am thinking those and a small lift will make it look pretty nice :D Would 30" be too large for the stock gear ratio? (Its a 5 spd)
  11. BUMP it up, need to find out whether or not to order the part asap so I can get it to the mechanic in time!! Thanks again guys, you all are awesome.
  12. Thanks guys, ( and thank you mod for putting this in the appropriate place! I really do appreciate it). I think the owner already had the flywheel resurfaced... Should I just let him put it in or should I tell him that he needs a new one? Maybe I will tell him I will buy it as long as he takes a little off the price or something. Its a great deal already, but I am trying to keep this is low cost as possible. If he had it resurfaced and puts that back in, would I notice a problem immediately? I will be test driving it after the repair prior to purchasing it, what exactly happens when its resurfaced/what should I be feeling for?
  13. Thanks a lot guys, all you 6'5 people have made me less concerned :D I'm very excited to be joining the community. As long as all goes well with the deal the one I am looking at should be in my driveway by next week, and I will be sure to post up all about it.
  14. Here's a real simple question, how tall are all of you comanche owners? I am 6'3 and someone mentioned that I may be too tall to fit in one, I honestly didn't even think about this. Any other tall people on here get around OK in one? I know I know, the best way to tell is to sit in it, but the one I am planning on getting is an hour drive each way, just trying to get an idea from you guys.
  15. Hey guys, recently put a deposit on a 1988 Comanche Pioneer, 5spd, with 120k miles on it. Tires are great, frame is solid, body is a little beat and rusty but I will be fixing and respraying it most likely flat army tan, interior is excellent, and its having a new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, and new slave cylinder lines put in by the owners uncle before I pick it up at his shop. The truck is only costing me $600. I was just curious, how long do the peugot trannys last if not beaten on badly? The only beating this thing will take is very very mild offroading like driving down muddy trails and some snow playing, so the tranny won't be beaten too bad. If this post isn't OK in this thread please let me know and I will delete it and start a new thread elsewhere, thanks alot! Looking forward to hearing from you manche pros!
