akamcbird
steering wheel suggestions.... ive got the gray interior with the leather wrapped steering wheel, the leather is disintegrating quick in one spot. should i get a new steering wheel, if so which one? should i remove the leather and get a good cover or wrap? i just don't want it to look out of place. mvusse
The steering column is made by Saginaw, so any GM steering wheel will fit.
87Warrior
For the time being, you can peel off the leather wrap and drive it like that. The wheel will be white, but smooth and comfortable to grip.
1990 Pioneer 4x4
If you like the wheel just get another wrap. It's kinda like saying, my tires are getting worn out, should i get rid of my rims... :rotf:
akamcbird
well if i don't get any good alternatives i will be re wrapping it. but I'm tryind to find out what others have done and what products people like. and i am often the type to change rims (and tire specs) when my tires get warn out... just to change it up. CWLONGSHOT
Mine was fugly and I swapped in a GRANY wheel a couple years ago. Its smaller in diameter, but i really like the feel and the look is OK. Kinda modern for the 80's style of the truck. but with the newer seats its OK. I cannot seem to find a good pic.. I'll ahve to snap a new one.. CW
jpnjim
I swapped a (1970's-80's) 3 spoke AMC wheel, with a 1970's style 'Jeep' center cap on my old MJ, looked good (& retro), but was a little thin compared to what else you could get. 1980's Camaro's had pretty thick wheels, but they might look out of place in an MJ. Though you could probably adapt either the old, or new style center cap to it without much work.
Pete M
I re-wrapped mine with a leather kit.
HOrnbrod
Here's one from a late 70's Buick Turbo Regal: With custom center cap I had made at the local highschool: Here's a Camaro Z28 "rope" steering wheel I had on for awhile w. Pete M
might as well walk through the chevy side of the yard to see what's available. might find something aftermarket and cool.
HOrnbrod
Might amend that to state the GM side of the yard. Any pre-airbag GM 60s-90s steering wheel will bolt on our Jeep Saginaw columns. The Buick 3-spoke wheel looked similar to the OEM leather Jeep wheel (that's why I got it), but there are 100's more out there that will work. I even had an Olds Toronado wheel on it too for awhile that was very nice.

HOrnbrod
Nope, that one won't work. No way to wire in the horn circuit guts. Might look good in an MJ though w. a "RETIRED NAVY" plate on the back. :D
dasbulliwagen
Looks like it would work just fine!
