Pete M
That's interesting. Most of the stuff I've purchased at HF was more than 20% off. :hmm: Though I guess if I needed it now, 20 is waaay better than full price. :D

I can only go there if I leave the credit card behind. :D Keep forgetting and leaving the tab open eh? I've learned I can't trust myself to stop putting things in the cart. :shake: I've also learned that certain HF items should be avoided. Like sockets. Or brake line wrenches. :shake: But that big sledge is still going strong, the 12 ton jackstands and the foldable engine hoist are friggen awesome, and I can't even remember life before I had all these ratchet straps at my disposal. jpdocdave
you gotta be careful, they can have some real garbage. i guess if you don't use your tools every day like i do its different. but sometimes you're just throwing money away.

I agree with Pete... for stuff that doesnt need to be tight-spec'ed or accurate they are great... Jack stands???? Do I need the pair with the pretty Snap on Logo at $200 or would that money be better spent on a $40 pair of HF jack stands????
jtdesigns
I don't know fellows... I've seen an almost 90% upgrade in China's quality. I just went and spent a big chunk of change there, and I have to say the 2 3/8" ratchets I got were jaw droppingly great feel and so far have held up to some heavy use. I did get a set of the crappy line wrenches though...... And their ratchets are the exact same "AmPro" ones that Northern Tools sells. A lot of Northern Tools hand tools were the exact same as the Harbor Freight ones. The only difference is Northern stamps a brand name on them and maybe a rubber handle. The point of this post is to say I was disgruntledly impressed with HF's quality in alot of things..
brdhntr
hf is a great store, it's just not the right place to get everything. if you don't have much to spend, but need some tools, go for it. something is better than nothing and they do have satisfaction guaranteed. when talking about tools, i tell people to spend as much as they can on the stuff they will use regularly. if it's something you use once a year or less, feel free to save some bucks. never go that cheap on the electric tools though, you'll regret it in the end. i'm a craftsman man myself. i've had and have some snap on, but buck for buck, i'll go with craftsman now. i use my tools alot and feel the quality of craftsman is excellent.

dunl
We have a place up here in Canada called Princess Auto....it's an auto/farm supply store. Complete hydraulics hoses and fittings, trailer axles, winches, tools, air tools, and you never know what kind of stuff you will run into in the surplus section, like so: Some of the stuff is junk, but it is getting better. As for Chinese quality, being a string instrument teacher, in the 80's the quality was crappy, but not all of it. Now, the best student model double bass you can get is a Christopher bass from the Far Orient. They're working on it... :D

HOrnbrod
Yeah, I have to admit most of the Chinese stuff is making leaps and bounds quality-wise. But where else could it go but up? :D The real good junk now comes from India. The Russians are even producing decent products now in some areas. After WWII the Japanese produced the most gawd-awful junk in the world, now look at them. And the so-called quality masters of the world, including us and Germany, are sliding the opposite way. It's all cyclic.
