Towing capacity

Recommended Posts

I currently have an '81 Chev C20 to haul trailer, but I have a '76 J10 shortbox with J20 axles that will take it's place (as soon as someone with $1200 buys the Chev with 454/TH400 and 4 almost brand new 33/12.50 tires on alloy wheels I'll have the money to finish it.)

The bumper is rated up to a 2000 pound trailer and 200 pound tongue weight. That information is stamped in the bumper.

Furthermore (from my 87 manual):

Class I hitch:

2000 pound trailer weight, 300 pound tongue weight.

For any engine or transmission.

Class III hitch

5000 pound trailer weight, 350 pounds tongue weight weight carrying or 750 pounds tongue weight weight distributing.

Needs 4.0 engine, automatic transmission with transmission cooler, power steering, heavy duty battery, cooling system and axle (Dana 44)

Yes, from the dead.

Do these numbers apply to an 88 as well? Not that I would actually try to tow 5k# with it. I have all the requirements except the tranny cooler and D44 (I have D35).

I tow a 4000 to 4500 lbs (fully loaded) with a 6 cylinder Isuzu Rodeo. Have done this for the last 10 years all over the Western U.S. and Canada. Worst gas consumption was 12 mpg going over 12,100 feet in the Rockies. I could count on 14 mpg most of the time. Never needed 4 wheel drive. Have used two Rodeos (Honda Passport twin). First one was a 5 spd stick, second (and current) is a 4 spd Auto with 4 wheel drive. Anita wanted an automatic so what can I say?

You don't need to have a V8 to tow a trailer.

i'm gonna use mine to tow for a short time. but the d44 and trans cooler is a requirement. and i'd also say a gauge for the trans temp, my trans temp got as hi as 180 in stop and go traffic w/ aux. cooler installed, you'll wanna know while you're towing what your trans temp is or your truck won't last long. trailer brakes are also required.

if you do it right, realize you aren't gonna win any races, keep it at a controllable speed, it will do it. if you're dumb, you'll tear the truck up, and endanger others.

Nope, don't need a v8. But the gear ratio in your Rodeo helps out a lot. Saves wear and tear on the tranny. Our Jeeps were cursed with some pretty pathetic ratios. :(
